I just didn't want to give freedive advice to a 12 year old.:D and have his dad want to kick my ass.

I would become a skindiver for a year before I thought of tanks, the OC speros has guys at all different levels
    of diving.

    Cheers, Don

I've done scuba RESORT dives before I even have a Scuba tank.... Originally got it for my Pellet Gun & Paintball gun. 120 HP Steel tank, supposed to be good, but I don't know.

Plus I figured a freediver class (if there was one) might help me better ID fish and shellfish that I can munch on. I started Sportfishing on the cattle boats last year and loved being out, and REALLY loved the sushi. I figured freedive spearfishing is something I can do (after start up costs) for less $$ on a day to day basis and still have a blast.

Hey man. You probably won't get too much of a reply here as this is a freediving site. You'd probably get more feedback from a site like spearfishing planet.

    Good luck

I know there are some differences between the freedivers and the scubadivers, personally I want to do BOTH, and I don't want to hurt myself in the process. is the OWC only for scuba? Won't it help with freediving at all?

Hey, if there's a class for freediving let me know, and I'll go for that.

New Guy on the block, and I wanna do things right. Spearboard seems to have more Cali people, but it seems the Moderator has a backlog of requests, I'm guessing.

Anyhow, I need an OWC, and then I'm thinking about Night Diving classes and "Underwater Hunter and Collector" PLUS I'm going to need gear: custom sized wetsuit (Short and Stubby), fins, speargun a bit later.
PS OWC is for SCUBA or Freediving or both??? (I'm interested in both)

SO.... I live in Huntington Beach, but am willing to travel a bit (prolly 45 mins) to get a cheaper/ better class and dive shop. Sport Chalet costs $550 including boat to Catalina, Beach City Scuba has classes for $400 with beach dives, (which I'm ok with I think, unless you say otherwise.).... There are so many options and I need some options but I need to get an idea of where the experienced divers and spearos are pointing me to go.

If you have a BAD experience at a certain local dive shop, I wouldn't mind hearing it either, but I am NOT looking for unbased bashing....PM me if you feel that your bad experience shouldn't be seen by the public (and I will keep that private). I just don't wanna get screwed by the glitz and glamour and make unnecessary mistakes.

    Thanks In Advance,
    Danny

Hey Guys. My name is Danny. I'm 28 and have lived in Huntington Beach, CA for about 20 years. I'm one of those guys who lives really close to the beach and doesn't go very often/ hardly at all. But I have kept fish tanks and reef tanks all my life.

Yet on vacations I'm always choosing beachy tropical places: Hawaii, Bahamas, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Tahiti. So I have always loved snorkling and did maybe 3 resort scuba dives. on those trips I always catch rock crabs sand crabs, little or tiny fish by hand etc.

I'm planning on getting my OWC after next week but Sport Chalet costs $550, Beach cities Scuba costs $400, and I'm not sure if it's worth the difference for a trip to Catalina, or if there is a better place to go. Heck, I'd want a dive shop with some real fisherman. Oh yeah, and I have been lurking long enough to realize that most fishing grounds are kept more on the DL. But how does one even start? I have only seen surfers at Huntington beach... and people who fish off of the pier, which is not my cup of tea.

Last year, I started fishing with my uncle who's an avid fisherman, but doesn't speak a lick of English. First trip was an over-nighter out of San Diego - skunked (with one skipjack). Second trip was the following week and it was the same. Third trip, third week, but my uncle couldn't go so I went on a 2 day by myself and limited on Dodo, and Yellowfin. I was hooked! I would have kept going out if I could have afforded it....best sushi EVER!

About Spearfishing, I have never done it. But I have my own 6' Travel Spear Pole with a slip tip and Flopper tip. Maybe I should get a Tri-tip/ Paralyzer instead. The whole thing with shaft measures 6'10''. I decided to start with the Pole because it seems a little easier to start.
