    Hey Gang,
I'm getting ready to start shaping my Bluewater blank. It is a Padauk/Sapele mix, which I hope doesn't delaminate or something. It is to be a 65" Rear Plus gun and I'm deciding on the band layout.

I'm thinking this will need 4 -5/8ths (16mm) bands to propel the 5/16ths (7.94mm) shaft. My question is whether or not to go with a band slot versus the top tie in bands. The top tie in bands seem easy and straightforward, but I imagine that they would be more prone to getting caught in the mono as they are less controlled after firing.

Dealing with 4 bands is annoying, I could go with 4 top tie in or 4 individual holes, one band slot, or two slots. I'm even considering 2 top tie in and 2 individual holes to manage them better.

So, what's bad about the top tie in bands? What input do you have?

I'd skip the sharpener as its much cheaper almost anywhere else. You might also want to consider a longer knife for bass. I have one for togs and one for big bass.

a.)1911 Pearce grips on AR handles. I still need to buy SS screws and a cooler palm grip. It's a little big with 5mm gloves. I won't need them in 2weeks as it warms up significantly.
ii.) Padauk with Herranen Epoxy. Guy at Woodcraft pronounced it "Pahdook".
3.) Gun is tapered from the top and was supposed to be an enclosed track, but I accidentally milled it too wide, so it's a mostly enclosed track.
IV.) The reels will be killer on this gun and the bigger brother. I will add a couple grams of ballast under the line guide after putting the reel on.
E.) Wishbones will be tightened up all the way, those bands are like 3 years old and I put them together Sunday morning just to get out on the water.

I do not understand why anyone would attach a knife to their leg or arm. It just seems like it could not be easy to get to when you need to get to it. I put mine on my belt and wear it in the center covering my belly button and lower unit. Easy to get to with either hand and not in the way. Just saying...:toast:

I have one on my belt and one on my leg. I got caught up once and simultaneously dropped a knife. I now have two. Inside of right leg is good for me.

Isn't it hard to sit down with the knife in front?

I tried making the sleeve out of an old wetsuit to make a knife holder, but it wasn't stretchy enough and wouldn't stay in place. It kept wanting to ride down. I still want a knife on the top of the thigh or on the chest, mounted to a vest. I might do that with some binding clips, now that I think about it.

So I built a RI special gun and finally got to use it today, it's a 47" mid handle. It has the band stretch of a 100cm euro, but the length of a 75cm from the handle to the tip. The spear has super short overhang because it's designed for shorter ranges and maneuverability.

I will add a reel tomorrow when I get them in from a special courier in FL. Hopefully my dyneema arrives soon after. I will go over the specs of the gun and in detail later. Today, I just needed it to shoot. Water was 50 degrees F. I scrounged up some old, heavily used bands to make it work. It shot really well with minimal recoil as there is so much wood (I want to trim some out to reduce it, actually)

Lastly, I named it "White Chin" for the primary target, Tautog or Blackfish, also called white chins (prominent when they get big). I will fry these up tonight and have noodles.

I looked in to this a while back. It was expensive and not worth the difference in price from the Rob Allen stuff. I have a friend that uses the Riffe line and it really does not float that great. He always has a big loop dragging behind him when we dive.

Didn't know that. Cameron Kirconnel didn't mention that at all when he posted about it in a little message board that I partake in.

First, the finish is going to get nicked and scratched on the boat. You can take this two ways: you can reduce your give a shit factor for now or just keep in mind that any imperfections now will be fixed when you fix the scratches. I chose both! I was literally coating a speargun last night and have had some difficulties.

Second, are you sure that it is dust? On my first gun, I had problems from tiny bubbles forming on the epoxy while curing that I thought was particles. I had to slow down on the brushing and make sure the wood matched the temp of the room. If it is cooler, I've read that bubbles can form.

I almost forgot to tell you that I'm going to vacuum the brushes beforehand the next time I do this.

    P. S. Phil's instructions say to just blow off dust (no acetone).
