Funny to see all you pipe gun boys comming over to the dark side :p

The verdict is still out on the big wooden boat for me :) I like my carbon pipegun so much that I may not end up liking this gun based on it being so different. But like you with the reel I want to experiment for myself and go against my instincts a bit and try new things. If I dont like it im sure I can find someone interested in buying it for at least what it cost me to build.

Judah is already half way there shooting a wooden tito gun with pipegun handle and a 19/16 band muzzle and inline bands. I think he wants to turn that thing into a 19mm band only reef gun and make this gun his new bigger mutton and grouper sniping monster.

Hi marginatus thanks for the feedback. Ive actually been toying with both of those ideas a bit and have a version that looks eerily similar to your drawing. The Abellan denton does both of those things pretty much like that. I do prefer a traditional bottom of the gun line wrap/guide (was planning on putting a hole in it for the line) but with the side line release it may make sense to offset it towards the side the release is on.

I should also mention I would like to eventually remove horns from the places opposite the line release so there is only a horn where the wrap will go.

Here is my current working design for the muzzle. I like the top half but the bottom im a bit unsure of.

Top top half will match the track width and is a bit wide for the spear to clear. The rounded lines in the middle will act as a line guide. And the triangle at the bottom will be bent out and used as a line wrap (maybe).

Ihad sounds good to me. That would be cool!

Yes marginatus thanks i understand. A little bit of angle is okay, im just trying to avoid the major angle and wrapping around the stock that happens with usual band holes. They will also be on seperate shark fins so it should give it some room.

Plans have changed a lot to allow both bands to sit level. Im either going to love or hate this gun based on how different it is from my carbon pipegun. But at this point its almost the antithesis. Although I guess it makes sense to make a gun that is different from my pipegun (wide, flat bands, powered up, heavy). Instead of a wooden copycat that could never live up to its nimbleness.

Ill post some new renderings soon.

This came in the mail in the meantime. Is it weird that I cant stop smelling it? Thanks again woodguy its extremely beautiful and flawless.

Trying to have enough meat to elevate the bands at the muzzle (need Atleast the stretched bands width i imagine) and also creating a profile that puts the bands flush into the stock. Not as much worried about band hole size as that will be based on an unstretched band.

Does anyone know what the diameter of various bands are when stretched to an average elongation? More importantly of 5/8 (16mm) bands?

If someone doesnt have this info on hand I will take a measurement but I need a new caliper first as mine had an unfortunate epoxy accident a while back.

The 3 mil was perfect, felt very warm and comfy all day. me and frank have been on much colder beach dives recently with the same results. A few months ago we went when it was 47 out in the am lol. Water was I think 69 and it still felt good in the water. Out of it not so much.

Went spearfishin' Sunday with Frank (hardline) on a buddys boat. Despite the forecast calling for high winds and some pretty sloppy wave action at times it was actually a really nice day of diving. Went out a good ways and found some really nice viz and reefs despite the swell and chop. All kinds of cool caves and ledges and fun stuff to dive. Ended up with a nice cooler with dinner for everyone of hogs yj's and some snapper. I think the highlight of the day was a team effort on a monster late season bug. Frank found him and signaled us over and him and after a bit of a battle I ended up going all the way into a cave and carefully snaring him. Then all the fish became dinner. The end.

    Thanks guys.

Hau. Yes I am definitely not a fan of tie in bands. I like the way a full band lays in a loop instead of in a line, and I like the extra stretch over the front of the gun.

jaguigui. Yes parts of this gun inc the muzzle are def inspired by the abellan and other euro guns. I think the stainless will offer a number of advantages including making the muzzle very small, putting a durable metal cap on the gun, incorporating a line guide into the plate. Also looking forward to trying to fabricate the plate.

Thanks George. This one is gonna be a major technical challenge to do all the shaping but if I pull it off I think its gonna be pretty sexy.

Been itching to start building a new gun for a long time. Plus I need a nice stress reliever for taking breaks from work so I decided to start planning a new gun. I love my speardiver carbon pipegun, but ive been thinking about a 120ish wooden reef gun for a long time. So I decided on building a wooden euro gun with an American shaft. My main goal is to build a gun with some decent mass so I can power it up a little bit. And build an intricate tapered design to challenge my woodworking skills have fun designing it etc.

    Heres the plan so far.

58" teak stock from the luxurious vaults of woodguy.
Vertical and horizontal taper, recessed handle. band recesses in stock.
    Deep open track.
    2x16mm tight bands.
Speardiver 7mm 62" US sharkfin shaft.
    Speardiver AR-15 handle.
    Speardiver reverse trigger mech.
    Speardiver Line wrap/guide.

Im doing some planning in rhino3d trying to figure out a shape that will taper nicely, absorb the shape of the bands a bit, and level them out to some degree. So far this is what ive got. The end will probably need some adjustments to have a chance of holding the bands up how I want them to be. Maybe some stainless risers are in order.

Im open to any any all input and criticisms of the design. I might not listen, but I do appreciate different points of view on gun design. In the mean time its time to give Dan a visit and start collecting parts.

Updates will be coming slowly but steadily.

I never made it this year. Judah, they did have a few pretty cool seminars I wanted to hear like the history of spearfishing in SA by Rob Allen. But between not living in Fort Lauderdale anymore, being tired from diving the day before, and seeing that its mostly exactly the same stuff as last year I decided to skip it. I do like looking at all the gear and hearing some of the seminars though. Last year was also cool to meet a number of people behind screen names.

    Also, hahahahahahahahah rofl.
