When I went to Hawaii, I was really dissapointed that there is not a "Hawaiian language". Just isolated words. I though I could learn another culture and did not happen. Most of the "natives" don't even know more than 3-4 words....

One of the things I've found cool about Hawaii is how much of a melting pot it is for a wide variety of Pacific Rim cultures. Lots of mixed race mutts like me :D. But the blending of cultures & ethnicities is also what has degraded some of the Hawaiian culture. The the Hawaiian blood ancestry line has been so diluted that much of the language/culture has been lost. That's what happens when hundreds of thousands of outsiders settle in Hawaii. ;)

Depending on who you talk to, there are still people that speak/study the language. We had Hawaiian class in school & I know several who have studied the language in college, including a couple Master's students in Hawaiian language. While not a spoken language for most, a lot of the words have been worked into every day colloquial vernacular.

There's still a lot of misconceptions about Hawaii. When I was in elementary school & we had class penpal projects... you'd be amazed how many questions I got like this:
"Do y'all live in grass huts?"
    "Do you have electricity?"
    :laughing3:

The only island where Hawaiian is still spoken as a primary language is Niihau. And it's for preservation of culture, not a visitor destination.

    Shimmy!

Nice to see you on here & good catching up!
Hope your business continues to do well enough so you can make it out more this year... :D

    Harold,
    What was the water temp?

For that spot, pretty warm - ~52.

It's usually cleaner there than Monterey/Carmel, but also typically colder.

Temperatures up here don't fluctuate nearly as wide as socal. Pretty much 48-53 year round, with a couple degree swing in other direction.

After this show, life will begin again. At this point I feel like a one man sweatshop.

Well... your boss is kind of a dick... :rolleyes1:

Want me to pee in his coffee again? :D

What kind of gun is that you´re diving with, a Omer?

    Sporasub ONE gun. :)

Had to replace bands that morning, so I just took it off my Omer Cayman HF. Took me a few shots to get used to it, but still workable.

Headed to the coast Saturday for an afternoon shoredive with a couple buddies. :smt003

Very sunny & warm; a gorgeous day in Big Sur.
Some long-period swell beginning to come in, but relatively flat overall.

Crystal clear visibility in the shallows, but the fish seem to have moved out deeper.
On the outside, visibility was slightly degraded, but still a very nice 30-40ft!

There were a lot of fish around, but we had to work hard for them.
All the fish shot were between 50-75ft.

As a nice bonus, we each got one healthy vermillion. :smt007

(driveway shot before parting ways, fish already gutted/gilled/iced)

Here's my second attempt at compiling a dive video.
I'm embarassed because it's a bit rough, but I'm learning.
Not only did I learn more about the editing process, but it helped me visualize how to better frame shots & sequences in the future.

Look forward to working on it my next dive! :smt001

    * Looks better if you open in 720 on youtube.

Luckily one of my buddies is great at gyotaku... so I've bribed him with sushi & beer to print ~10 of my fish for me. :)

On queue for this year is a wahoo I shot last summer. :D

I also have one from Naoki Hayashi (gyotaku.com) & one from Shane Hamamoto.

As for my own printing, I've done dozens... but I'm a consummate perfectionist & fish printing is so much of an organic art form. As such... I'm too embarrassed to share any of my personal prints. :(

    Hmm... brown suit...
"Kukai" - means poop or to poop. :)
    Opaleye would love it! :D

    On a more serious note...
Not Hawaiian, but what about "tako"? Brownish & blends in with the rocks.

Thanks for the pictures, the red fish looks like the French Poly fish we call Ala-ihi...a squirrel fish.

    Cheers, Don

Ala'ihi is a Hawaiian name for squirrelfish, but a different type.
There are at least 3 main types of Ala'ihi... I only eat the larger type, which gets up to 6# or so.

This one is a U'u or more commonly "menpachi"
I was wrong in calling it a squirrelfish earlier; it's actually a soldierfish.

If you scroll down this page, there are a number of great pictures depicting the variations amongst squirrelfish & soldierfish. :)

How big the red fish get there, its hard to get them much bigger than the one in the picture here for me. I agree with the bones, but my daughter loves them.

I think I've only shot one over a pound.

There are at least a couple different types of menpachi. Some don't grow more than 6" or so. Others can get up to 2# at the far extreme. Generally the 1/2 to 3/4 # size are quality fish.

It's a bit large, but wearable.

Even though the F10 is slightly larger and heavier than the D3, I'd be a lot more willing to wear it as an everyday watch based on aesthetics alone.

I have one, use it as my primary dive watch now.

I've had the same D3 since 2003 and it still works great... even though it looks like it's been through hell.
Since I got my F10, I've relegated the D3 to backup duty.

The F10 isn't as intuitive as the D3, but has a lot more functionality. Not sure if all the issues have been sorted out, but mine has worked great for the last year or so. As you said, it sure looks a lot more "adult" than the D3. :)

Wow, aside from the pattern on the lobsters, looks like a pic from Hawaii. :D

We have the same night tako - different species than the day ones, a fair amount longer/skinnier. Still good eats.

My grandparents love the red fish menpachi/squirrelfish... but the small sharp bones make it challenging to eat. Nevertheless, the flavor is good & I still take em when possible. :)

Thanks for the before/after pics. Always cool to see!

That's the logic I've always subscribed to. Imagine that launching from the public beach here in Fort Lauderdale you're required to have a flotation vest. That's without a kayak, just beach diving.

    That's just ridiculous...

And you're required by law to have a life jacket on your kayak at all times if you're paddling in the ocean. But you don't have to wear a life jacket unless you're a minor. As to the reason Alex wore his, I'm guessing he just thinks he looks cool in the life jacket :rolleyes1::D

I don't recall the specifics, but there was considerable discussion about that on our Cencal email list. I believe someone received confirmation from a Coast Guard official that a full wetsuit is a substitute for "approved flotation device". Makes sense since a guy overboard in a wetsuit will last 10x longer than a guy in shorts with a life vest. I'll try to find the statement.
