If your going to be diving in Malibu there is a lot of kelp. A banks board will be difficult to drag through the kelp. Guys up north do use them for abalone which can weigh a lot but are cumbersome to pull through the kelp foreests.

I would recommend a 90 -110 size gun. Lots of guys like the 110 as it allows for shooting larger fish like white sea bass and yellowtail which is harder to do with a 90. These fish can push 70 pounds. I have only taken one white sea bass and it was with my 90 (It weighted maybe 15 pounds) however I now use a 110 which I have used for yellowtail (also about 15 pounds). The 110 is my reef gun primarily. Either size will serve you well but you can bet you will eventually get another gun to add to your collection for different applications.

    Good luck and have fun.

I have the Rob Allen 11L float and I like it a lot for the limited yellowtail diving i have done with it here in California. It drags through the water well and I've yet to see it get pulled under water, but that's because the largest fish i have shot with it is also 15-20 pounds.

But soaking in lime will cook the fish, that's ceviche. Do you mean sear for a few seconds or fry?

Yes soaking in lemon will cook the fish just like ceviche. So you get the citrus flavor and a little less time on the heat keeping the fish moist. I add a little oil or butter to a pan and try to get a nice crisp layer on the fish yet its still pink on the inside.

Here is where I got the idea for the risotto if you like to play in the kitchen they have some cool recipes.

Soak fish in lemon and tangerine juice with ginger over night. Sear fish after sauces and rizotto are complete.

Roast Anaheim chilis in oven then seed and skin. Place in blender with avocado olive oil salt pepper to taste.

Blend Lilikoi (passion fruit) puree with silken tofu and mayple syrup.

Cut a couple of peeled beets and juice one beat. Add rice to pan with a splash of olive oil and waternstir till absobed.
Then add diced beets. Continue adding beet juice and water till rizzotto is cooked. While getting desired consistency. Invite family over for dinner and to stir consistently.

Forgive me but I am not familiar with that term. What is a fad and what is it's purpose?

In Hawaii there are large bouys that locals use to fish from. They call them FADs an acronym for fish aggregation device. Usually its just a large bouy but they can get fancy . In the 90s a large cement mixer from a truck was converted into a bouy and a large catamaran was always tied to it. Some big marlin where caught that year along with lots of tuna too. I know some people will place them illegally and keep gps cordinates to fish off of. Ive run into fads out with friends. If your out early enough you can get mahimahi but there is a lot of fish that hang out around them.

Very cool plate of fish. Thanks for sharing. I usually don't go just for one species although I probably should. HA! I dive local reefs mostly here so if a halibut presents itself or perhaps a bass, sheephead or rockfish I will pull the trigger. Maybe thats why I dont get the white sea bass. I feel I learned the most out of diving in Hawaii then I have in California. The clear waters offer a different perspective that one might not see while diving murkier water. Any equalizing noises seem to scatter fish, eye contact scares fish, a stiff body scares fish, I try to be more relaxed and fluid. I have tried smashing sea urchins, banging rocks, tossing sand, and chum but maybe I am too impatient cause those techniques don't work well for me. Although I have had success with waving my fingers with a light colored glove at fish. I try to use the reef and kelp to my advantage and try to dive between and below rocky structures which seems to attract fish. I use the kelp as a underwater blind and try to sneak around thicker kelp. I have tried diving bombing on top of fish and sometimes it works other times (especially parrot fish) they tilt sideways to get an eye on you and bolt. I have also had fish stop to look at me while I charged them at a full swim and others just swim away. I just try to vary things cause sometimes one thing wont work but others will. I am currently using an amber lense which I like cause my eyes stay a little more dilated when I am at the surface which allows me to see better in caves and darker water. I am also red green color blind so the extra red in the lense helps me except with the calico bass. They seem to blend in well unless I can silhouette them before they see me.

I enjoyed that - diving kelp beds in SoCal s on my bucket list. Looks so different from anything I've dove and interesting. Some "forum" friends of mine ave bagged 3 WSB over 70 pounds and you belong on the other forum too so you know. What speargun is this? Interesting cano on it.

Thanks - enjoyed the video! :thumbsup2:

Diving Kelp is awesome and takes a little time to get use too but it is a lot of fun and makes hunting more interesting. Yeah I saw the WSB but they are not in my neighborhood yet. Never got a large one before but maybe this year is the year? Fingers crossed.

The gun is an Ulusub 130rh but the band pull is similar to a euro 110.

Trace called me up Friday night to see if I wanted to join him for a Saturday morning dive to which I obliged. He had a spare gopro hero flat less with red filter water housing that he wasn't using and gave it to me which was very cool. After a few minutes of watching dolphins and birds work the water we jumped in hoping to find some tasty critters. My camera was acting up and I missed some of the bait balls swimming around and some nice sheep crabs that I think where mating cause they had their rear legs linked together. I figured out my camera issues and I recorded from there. I didn't get any fish but figured I would make a video of the things I managed to get on tape. Anyway Happy Easter all. Its always a pleasure diving with you Trace.

Ramon yo todavia no entiendo. Que estas tratando de lograr? Veo las dos gomas pero como se saca una para bajar el poder de tu lanza? Se ve interesante pero si podrias explicar eso mejor lo apreciaria. :)
