Them Royaks were a favorite with west coast boys as well, especially the Ab divers back in the day. Come to think of it as far as kayak's go...... I am not sure if there was anything else besides Royaks in the mid to late seventies until the became less popular ???? because of new plastics ????

Chase, whatever my personal feelings are about spearfishing on scuba, I must disagree with you. I'm not involved with fighting anti spearfishing legislation, other than providing a forum where information can be shared and divers can be made aware of and organize to fight the proposed legislation. But I understand the it's the scuba spearfishermen who spearhead the resistance, and have been doing so for years. Additionally any ground gained against spearfishing in any form, ultimately weakens our position and brings freedive spearfishing closer to being banned, so we have to stick together with the scuba speardivers.

I think this is a good topic. I also think that freedive spearfishermen stating publicly that scuba spearfishing should be banned for whatever reasons, is damaging to all of us. I'm inclined to ask you to pull this thread. But I'll wait to see if others agree with me.

I am with Dan here as well, became educated and a learned call.

No dive or fish or lobster or abalone or testing endurance and limits nor any creature of the sea is worth a life period. And now that I am older, yes wiser too I can convey that I truly believe youth, Ego and Testosterone perhaps and always poor judgement is the #1 reason why there are deaths in the sport.
    Been diving for 40 years.

Wow is it all of spearboard that's disenchanted so many or is it the so-cal scene part of SB?
Biologically remember the lesson about rats, in high populations densities, rats go crazy and turn on themselves..........

May 1st 2013 began the long awaited freshwater striped bass spearfishery for California spero's but controversy and a rocky road ensued. Controversy no surprise many knew, expected, some H&L fishing folks were going to be upset with the new allowance, but what was not expected by all but a few was "other" agency's and other management jurisdictions over bodies of waters. Such has been the case with one major river in the California DFW designated Central Valley District, the American River, a known would-be choice place to spearfish striped bass.

In comes to play two management controls, 1505 DFW designated salmon spawning areas and local CCR codes. From the Nimbus Dam on the American River to one mile south of the Arden street bridge is designated 1505 area, thus no spearfishing of any fish is allowed per DFW regulations. The new allowance for spearfishing of striped bass drove spero's to the AR with excitement and anticipation and right away some were met with citations. What was also not allowed and many were unaware were the local agency in management of the shore and river and their CCR that prohibit weapons in the American river parkway.

Controversy, are spearguns fishing equipment or is a speargun a weapon, and or can a speargun be both. This argument does not get decided by you or me as one I hope would expect, right. The argument is a legal argument, tried and ruled on a judiciary authority.

As of the writing of the this post it appears spero's to this day are spearfishing the AR one mile down stream of the Arden street bridge. No accountable confirmation in writing is of knowledge to this poster that the Sacramento County Rangers, nor DFW wardens are not or have been issued instruction to not cite spero's for spearfishing in the AR, but it appears for now enforcement offers may not be citing spero's for doing so. Ensure that it is okay to spearfish the AR before doing so. To me this means I would want a copy of that do note cite instruction in my possession before spearfishing the AR.

A man of adventure in deed. Way to go cutting it all to take out for uncharted waters and adventures. Being an American myself and have been to Australia in June, Perth area to so totally out of sync for me. Winter in June. So I guess you have adjusted by now, looking forward to hearing your adventures.

Sounds like a great opportunity for us. Now finding a lake we can dive in would be very nice for us so cal divers.

Your Castac Lake on top of the grape vine is in Kern County and Kern County is by definition within the Valley District according the DFW map that defines the Valley District areas. Now whether Castac Lake has the visibility or not for one to be successful at spearfishing is an another matter altogether and there is an issue as to whether the managing agency for the lake and their allowed uses policies allows spearfishing or any other form of diving to occur or not is yet another issue in its self. One in or around the L.A. area might want to look into that if so inclined to do so for that possible So-Cal lake dive opportunity, maybe?

Just passing it along in case folks here on speardiver did not get the word, but as soon as the Calif. office of administrative law approves the new regulations (if the OAL has not already done so) spearfishing of striped bass in the ocean and the central valley district for 2013 California fishery regulations will become a reality, California will finally have a freshwater spearfishery for something more considered table fair. Not that carp and other FW fish can't be table fair too; I guess.;)

Thanks guys for the welcomes!! and yes, n. of LA is home port where abs and halibut are king in my neck of the woods.....okay lings too, then caps, then RF. Also enjoy the salmon on the rod and reel as well. For as hunting goes, upland game birds.

And still loving it!!! And we ain't 25 anymore either but the measurement when its time to call it or not is not gauged by a spero's age or how deep one can dive and how long can dive on a signal breath, but rather its measured only when you can't get that shaft up anymore to stick em :laughing3::laughing3::laughing3:
West coast diver here guys, Calif. to Baja mainly. But I have dived a lot of place throughout the world over years.
