I will be headed up to Kristiansund for a course in a few weeks. Was wondering if anyone knew is it worth me bringing my gear and what some of the rules and regulations are? Or where I could find more information?

    Thanks

I am pretty new to spearing and I enjoy the show. Some of the seminars are very good and some are basically short commercials to get you hooked and signed up for a class. I went to the lobster seminar on sunday and learned several new things in only half an hour. Its great to learn little bit of info from guys like Rob allen Joseba and Daryl these guys have some much knowledge on the sport its hard to be around them with out picking up a few new tricks.
There isnt a whole lot of new gear from year to year but sometimes you can find good deals on stuff or win something in the raffles.
I was very disappointed to see sea shepard there. I know its done for charity but allowing them to have a both at blue and wild to me is a slap in the face to all spearos.
I cant ever go without buying a new gun so I probably wont go next year.

finding the right masks can be key. My scuba mask never leaks no matter what. My omer zero leaks when i have a lil scruff all day but is best if i have the full beard and gets better as the day goes on. Leaks bad around the nose when i start but after half an hour into the dive seals nicely. Go to a dive shop test some masks see which ones dont leak with the stache and start from there. Diving with facial hair takes work but its worth it lol.

You get more power with a roller gun because the bands are pulling the shaft for a longer distance. With standard band configurations after you pull the trigger the bands lose contact with the shaft sooner because the shaft is traveling faster than the bands. As Don sd the band with a roller gun is in contact with the shaft until the last few inches of the gun making it more than 1 roller gun band equals 2 conventional bands. Phil Herran had some numbers up on other boards about how quickly the shaft is moving faster than the bands on a standard configuration.

Usually what I end up doing on a lot of stuff is a lock splice on one side with the end to end method and then a long splice on the other side with a wiping line. Most of my experience in splicing is used for insea equipment so may not always apply for spearfisihng applications

there is a very easy way to do a brummel. You take the line pass it through whatever it is ur splicing it too then take the end from the long side and pass it through the short tail end then pass the tail end through the long end. This will give u a lock splice the problem is you have to pull however much shooting line off the reel to do it.

Locked brummel Splice needs no whipping line as it is impossible for it to slip. But it would be very difficult to use a locked brummel splice without using something to connect the loop to the shaft.

Well part of the problem is when people make blanket statements saying soft fins are better or stiff fins are better because that is someones opinion. Soft blades are useless for me. I over kick them. Im 250lbs and have pretty big legs. I prefer med to stiff fins but thats my preference. I really like using stiff fins but find I dont get the full bend in the blades so I stick with med. The way I did it is I just tried everyones fins. I went to club meetings met new people asked them if could try there fins and that way I found exactly what I didnt like. I took a bit of a gamble on my leaderfins because the price. Blade and foot pocket combos are a pretty personal thing so really the only way your gonna find out whats best for you is to try some. Not sure how close you are to Moana But i know JD is in CA and is pretty cool about letting people try fins out. So I would give him a call. As well as asking everyone u know if u can try their fins.

Also there is another problem in picking a stiffness. There is no standard for stiffness. Even the same company can have different batches of the same blade that come out softer or stiffer than earlier batches. I have 2 sets of leaderfins that are both meds and feel completely different.

    Nice video.

The only way to avoid a carbon fin from breaking in Pathos footpockets is to make it significantly stiffer, to the point where the flex is not to my taste. I prefer a softer fin, it tires my legs much less and gives me the same propulsion, also allowing a better breath hold. Having watched the video, I can tell you starting at 1:27 that is a stiff fin.

This may be the reason he doesnt have a soft fin yet. He only has med and stiff. The med are stiffer than my leaderfin med. but not as stiff as the GFT softs i tried.

I went from aqualung slingshots which are massive scuba fins to my leaderfins and it was such a huge change but I wish I had done a lil more research before I got the leaderfins. Because the moanas make my leaderfins feel like scuba fins. It really is a huge change

    Enjoy your fins.

What blade/ pocket were you using immediately before these?

My everday fins were the leaderfin camo carbons (or composite) in omer stingray pockets but before i decided which fins to buy I burrowed several other fins. I tried GFTs, DiverR carbons and fiberglass, and C4 mustangs.

Because I held them out of the pocket side by side with several different blades at Blue and Wild. Iv also held them side by side with other fins mounted in PATHOS foot pockets.

Iv used pathos footpockets with other blades and yes they are lighter but the blade is actually lighter than other carbon blades. Also the problem with the transfer of power with the pathos footpockets seems to be much better with these blades as the pockets is bonded to the blade not mounted in place with hardware. This makes the pathos pocket seem much firmer than the other blades I used them with.

they sound real cool, web site?

Wanted a set of fins so I did some research tried out a few fins from some friends and was having a hard time deciding what I wanted. I read some reviews about moana watermans but didnt know anyone locally who had a pair. So I called the company and right away someone answered. To my surprise JD the owner/inventor of the fins answered. He told me all about his product helped me decide which stiffness (med), size and foot pocket (pathos). JD seems to take a lot of pride in his fins and the fact that the blades are made in the USA.

First thing I noticed about the fins was the weight. They are much lighter than my leaderfins and the other carbons i tried. I got them in the water and they are super efficient. It takes little effort to really get moving but the biggest difference I noticed in the fins was my recovery time improved. After an entire day of diving my legs feel no fatigue. Before the moanas after a long day of diving I would be exhausted but now I still have plenty of energy. These fins are so light I dont notice im wearing them. Its like they are part of my leg. These fins seem to be perfectly designed for me.
