You're not alone. After that front moved out and we had some hot weather I figured I would go play hide&seek. Not much luck, so I moved in a little shallower for some butts. Made one drop into a kelp tunnel with sandy bottom thinking it just looked fishy.

I slowly finned into it and about halfway through on the bottom, saw something to my left and turned my head but kept kicking. When I looked back straight I was staring directly into the mouth of what I thought was a shark about to eat me! I put on the brakes and was face to face with the biggest black seabass I have ever seen. I promptly laughed and he turned and gave me a tail thump while I followed for a short while seeing if he would lead me to the promise land. It was 100# easy.

I'm not the biggest guy but I'm pretty sure he wanted to inhale my upper body into his mouth. Moral of the story, no ghosts but watch out for maneating bsb.

Yeah, then if that is the case, I think keeping a tiny bit below your nose shaved is going to be your best bet.

Thank you for your service in the Air Force! I salute everyone who makes it their job to continue to keep our country safe :thumbsup2:

Here's my experience and I have a fairly lively beard.

The longer your mustache is, the better! Contrary to thought but I have found it true. The hair actually gets saturated after a while and my mask doesn't leak all that terribly after that. I tried keeping my mustache short for a while and found it to leak more than when I had a longer stache. I am also used to just having a bit of water around my nose and will clear it whenever I am bothered from it.

You can shave a little bit below your nose, it often helps act as a little barrier so the mask can touch virgin skin. I did that for a while but I grew the beard in the first place because I despise shaving, so I threw that idea out the window. I no longer utilize the under-the-nose shave technique unless I'm going somewhere fancy and need to have a dapper, manicured beard. That happens maybe a handful of times a year when I'm out on a first date haha!

One other thing that works well for me. When I am on the surface I actually equalize my mask with air so that its puffing out slightly, just enough air volume that any more and it will escape. If I keep a constant positive pressure in the mask I never get a leak and think that is the best thing I have found.

I also am determined to keep trying on masks until I have one that fits my beard perfectly. So my advice, don't shave! Chicks like a manly beard anyways :oldman2:

benthos are also on my favourite list...
check this one out: Exxon Valdez ‹ Benthos
Clean lines and as mentioned just flows....
I'm with Tufual's father... some guns are just a rounded block (with really bad handles)
some have a functional and beautiful shape

I agree but I feel like that Benthos gun you posted would get bad vibrations on the bands from any horizontal movement. It is an interesting looking design to say the least, there are a lot of things going on with that thing! The wishbones spreading the bands looks pretty awesome but I would be afraid of losing a finger haha

    fishy killa,

Spearboard is full of childish drama yes. BUT....

I recall getting a pm from you over there threatening me about something once and it seems like you have a habit of doing that to a lot of guys.. you thought because I was a "new" member on that forum that it meant I must be "new" to diving and the ocean, which is far, far from the case.

My advice to you regarding your attitude is that in life you typically get out what you put in. I prefer to put my energy into good things and often find that is what I get back.

However, regardless of what my initial impressions are of you, I would be more than happy to go diving with you sometime this summer. I was born, raised and live in San Diego and know my backyard playground pretty well.

I loaned my summer gun to a buddy in Hawaii last month though, so when I finish building the cannon I'm working on now I'll send you a message and we can go recon for some nice fish.

    great read. Thanks for that!

I'm a born and raised San Diego guy but have a few very close buddies living on Maui and Moloka'i. My first real shark encounter was with my buddy who grew up on east side moloka'i. Took me to his spot and told me to watch me back, I laughed and jumped in. Not 30 minutes went by and wouldn't you know it.. bumped.

Happened quite a while back but I still remember feeling humbled in between the shivers I had going down my spine haha.

    Howzit all,

I thought I would introduce myself since I'm new to this forum. I offer a little peace offering to you in the form of my first ever video I shot this past summer:

I am not the hunter in the film, but the eyes behind the lense. My buddy Nick had the opportunity to harvest a Dall Sheep in Alaska and invited me along. I thought it was the perfect chance for me to try my hand at filming. I've been into photography since high school but never dabbled in film until now.

I found out through this trip that I am in love with sharing other people's adventures through film, so if you're going some place amazing and want it captured, I'm thinking about pursuing this new passion of mine to see if I can feed my dog and myself with it.. and maybe a girlfriend if they can accept the fact I have a restless soul for travel.

So... Hello speardiver, I am new to you but have spent my short 25 year life in, on, and around the ocean. Here is a little different pace but still an incredible journey I got to be part of.

Make sure to watch it in HD. Kill the lights and turn it up, I spent quite a bit of time on just the audio. It is almost 19 minutes long so grab a beverage while it loads and then enjoy.

I was able to get a few days on the river after we flew back to Anchorage and got a couple monster silver salmon. Freshest salmon I have ever had, and the roe was amazing as well!

Maybe I'll see you in the water.

I also just finished this video for JD of Moana Waterman. A little more appropriate to this forum :)

    Nice video

Thanks Dan :) I'll post the link to the film I made in Alaska this past summer in another thread, I'm fairly proud of that one since it was my first ever. But let me not derail....

Until someone takes every fin that has been created and measures the flex in some standardized way a softer flex may be medium and a medium flex be stiff in comparison between companies. There is no way to really know unless you wear them yourself.

On that note, maybe I should try to obtain every freedive fin produced and film a comparison on stiffness using some type of machine...I could get a chart with actual numbers instead of opinions.

Someone want to get me a list and email addresses? haha

To my surprise JD the owner/inventor of the fins answered

JD is a one pony show. He doesn't have anyone working for him so you are only dealing with him.

I will add more to this post when I get home tonight but I made a post over on SB about Moana Waterman fins. I can link it later if I am allowed to cross-reference it?

I worked with JD the past month shooting and creating a short video he displayed for the Blue Wild. It details some of his design aspects and features of the Moana blades.

For what it is worth, he designed his Moana fins flex pattern and carbon weave with the pathos footpocket in mind. Almost all of the carbon blades I have seen broken from lack of support have been snapped where the 90 degree axis on the weave is. This is an inherent weak spot on most if not all fiberglass/carbon fins on the market and JD addressed this issue when he created the blades.

Time will tell on how everything turns out obviously, but I will let you know how they hold up with 99% of my spearing being from shore. I am not gentle on equipment and am using the Moana Waterman with pathos pocket exculsively now so I'll definately put them through their paces.

edit: I have no stake in Moana Waterman or the sale of JD's fins. I am trying to build my experience in the film world and am excited to add Moana Waterman to my very short film resume. I am using a pair of his fins but other than that I have no allegiance so take my opinion at face value.
