Always take your time to breath up correctly.
Never exhaust yourself chasing a fish to the point you can't safely make surface.
Never turn around once you have begun to ascend, it's extremely taxing.

Very important piece of information! Turning around while trying to ascend is a mistake many make, especially with fish on the spear.

    Thanks!
The most sought after fishes are the Hammour (Grouper) and the Kingfish (Narrow barred spanish mackerel). In terms of taste too, most people here love kingfish!
Sea Breams are delicious as well, but aren't as popular as the above mentioned fishes.

Kingfish are coming soon, as the waters are getting cooler. That's always good news!:)

I'm sure the shorter shaft length may get some getting used to in terms of "shooting from the hip".
I'll find out how it shoots only after some time in the water.

Intersting stuff, George. I found a slip tip here in one of the shops (Mares, I believe?). I might pick that up soon.

As of now, I've gone down the cheap route lol:D
I bought an orca flopper and pin, and went to a workshop to drill a hole for the pin, and sharpen the broken part into a pencil point tip. I hated sharpening tri cut tips, and I always felt that I got one of the angles with a tri cut wrong.

I haven't updated this thread in a while.
I've been diving around though, checking out different spots in Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah. The severe heat of the summer here isn't exactly the best time for spearfishing, but some fish are still around :).
    Here as some pics of my recent catches;

    2 Groupers, a Trevally and a sweetlips:

The weather's getting better, and pretty soon, we're gonna have some kingfish (narrow barred spanish mackerel) in our shallow spots!:thumbsup2:

So I shot a grouper today (with my Rabitech Stealth Pro), and it holed up in a very tight spot.
When I got the shaft out, the grouper not only tore off, but somehow broke off the tip and the flopper!:@

I've never seen anything like this before... the shaft broke at the flopper pin joint.

I earlier believed that Rabitech shafts were fairly solid. Having being shot into rocks and pulled around with larger fish. I guess I'm gonna take my words back. A 7mm shaft breaking at the tip because of a grouper is ridiculous!

Guess I gotta find another shaft now. Recommendations, anyone?

Thank goodness we don't have sharks frequenting our spots here.
With the bad viz here, any large predator coming out of the murk would be scary!
Aren't barracuda more likely to cause injury than a shark? Has anyone ever been charged by a Cuda without provoking one?

And I am not ashamed to admit that I'm fricken' stoked to kill fish. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. When I see that big silver mass of a dog snapper school off in the distance, my heart races a bit….I'm thinking how to kill. We're top of the food chain predators. LIke when a cat sees a bird or something and they go into stealth mode. Hell yeah….I love that shit. :thumbsup2:

I feel the same too! :thumbsup2:
I imagine myself eating the fish, before even taking the shot!
My adrenaline's pumping, waiting for that fish to turn back, enabling me to take a decent shot at it.

I suppose there's a reason why we all hunt on breath-hold. It's not exactly a rule of thumb, but it just 'feels right' to me. I can't imagine going into the ocean with scuba equipment and a speargun. Spearfishing and scuba diving are 2 separate things IMO. In this respect, I suppose I agree with Chase.
SCUBA spearfishing is banned in most countries, why isnt it at least discouraged in the US?
Due to the lack of regs, there are some people who spear on SCUBA in UAE as well, but I think the locals here prefer freediving.
