With 14mm bands you could cut them short at 350% stretch. Shorter bands means they should guide the shaft down the barrel more while still being way smoother than 3 x 16mm. If your setup was superior you wouldn't be thinking of changing it. If you look at koah fatback it uses 3 x 16mm bands but fires an 8mm shaft with 40cm over hang and people still complain that with that setup it kicks like a mule. And I believe koahs are weighted and ballasted as well.

Anyways, if the gun is a reef gun your running an overkill setup right now. 2 x 16mm should be all you need. Even 3 14mm is a lot for reef work. My buddies $1300 Custom Wong hybrid has 3 x 14mm and its a pain to shoot.. also weighted and ballasted

Measure your band stretch which was given to us @ 51 inches. Multiply that by 2 and then divide by 3.5

I merely made an educated guess based on the length of the band's specified @ 24 inches. 24 inch bands for 129cm of band stretch is definitely over 300% and near 350%. I might of been off but I know it's in the ballpark without doing math..:thumbsup2:

You could always change the bands for the hybrid to 3 x 14mm's. 3 x 16mm's is too much for a light weight hybrid, even a full wood gun would still feel a lot of kick with that setup. I believe that Daryl Wong rigs his hybrids of that size with the 3 x 14mm setup. My buddy has a custom Wong gun with this setup.

I honestly do not believe that the length of your wishbones has much to do with it, if at all. My wishbones are double the length of Greekdiver's and I never have the line tangle with the bands. It really boils down to where your shooting line is in relation to the bands prior to the shot. In a rush to load your bands with fish present most will not pay attention to this factor.

When you load your bands your shooting line needs to be running parallel with the bands, not under them. If your shooting line is attached to the back of the spear like euro style then you need to pull the shooting line to the outside of the bands so that it's running along side of the bands.

If your shooting line is attached to the shark fin tabs then it should be the first tab closest to the muzzle. If its on the very first tab that places it ahead of the bands wishbones and out of the way. So I do not see how this issue could happen with that setup.

I watched a video the other featuring Terry Mass on ITZTV (YouTube channel) about hunting white sea bass. I was looking at the gun he was using and the wishbones were very long. I think many old school guys do it this way. Anyways, I don't think he has this issue nor blames it on his wish bones and he's hunting in the thick kelp forests of California and worldwide for that matter.

    Greekdiver,

Do those metal inserts scratch your gun? :confused1:

    George,

So you keep some of the floatline bunched in your shooting hand and if you have to release your gun for any reason the gun and bunched line get released together?

Man thats weird. Where is you line crimped to your shaft? On my gun gun its crimped to the closet fin to the muzzle, which puts it in front of the bands so I dont see how my setup could have a line wrap.

But especially true with open muzzle guns, if you pull the line away from the bands after loading so that it's not pinched under the band you should never have a line wrap. From the first time I applied this technique I have never had a line wrap again. Honest.

Line tangling with your bands happens when you load your bands and the line that's crimped to the shaft running to the muzzle gets pinched under the band. To remedy this all you have to do is remember to pul the line from under the band so its running along side it every time you load. This applies to any open muzzle speargun.

When I started spearfishing I was using railguns and this would happen to me a lot. Then I read an article written by Rob Allen himself addressing this problem. I guess I wasn't the only one having the issue of line tangling with bands. Anyways, ever since applying this technique I've never had a line tangle again, ever.

Now I'm using an enclosed track gun where the mono is crimped to the first shark fin tab and don't have to worry about this issue and loading is so much faster and simplified.

    Hey everyone,

So yesterday I picked up my new Speardiver C90's in (M)edium stiffness and took 'em for a spin. I chose the Picasso Power foot pockets with the retainer knob to avoid having to drill holes for screws near the toe angle. I brought my other fins with me for comparison which are Leaderfins CF with a soft blade stiffness and Hammerhead Kuadal foot pockets. I immediately noticed a difference in the quality and workmanship of these fins and could tell that Dan put a good product together. In the water the Speardiver fins are a lot more reactive and even though they were more stiff than my first set of CF fins they didn't fatigue my legs or cramp my feet at all. The foot pockets fit so well that I was using them without socks for a little. And best of all, when I kicked I could feel the blades springing me forward instead of feeling mushy like my soft Leaderfins.

Coming from someone who has had the opportunity to use cheaper quality carbon fiber fins for an entire year and really bang them up and put them through their paces I can definitely tell the difference between them and my new Speardiver C90's. Now I understand what others were saying regarding the difference between quality and affordable. Fortunately these fins are both.

My buddy had a pair of Moana's with Omer foot pockets. He said that they destroyed his ankles surface swimming but up and down work was a piece of cake. Sadly, he lost them in some rough surf while we were trying to do a kayak dive from shore. We had no business going out that day because it was almost surfing conditions. By by $500 :(
