Hey folks. I was finally able to get back in the water today for the first time since the medical ordeal I told you all about. I am still on the blood thinners so my doctor is all paranoid about me diving. I should be able to come off of them in june. I kept it shallow.... about 25ft. It felt great and my bottom times are about 2 minutes at that depth. I hope it doesn't take long to get back to where I was before. Anyways, just wanted to give an update. Stay safe

I wouldn't look for the benefit of let off but more so the added speed from the torque curve that the cam shape creates. I never cared for much let off as it takes away from speed. And since we aren't required to hold our spearguns at full draw the let off is not needed. But like you said, they did it on a sling with no trigger mech.

I probably don't have enough knowledge to actually comment on this thread but reading through the later parts of it I see some similarities to archery shooting. When building arrows for a bow, you have to match the spine of the arrow to the power of the bow. The "spine" being the stiffness of the arrow relative to the length of the arrow. If you have an arrow that is not stiff enough the energy causes side flex in the arrow. side flex causes huge accuracy problems and loss of speed. Im sure at some point, even though we are shooting steel shafts and not carbon or hollow aluminum arrows, this might hold true with spearguns as well. Meaning that we could add more bands or thicker bands until it has an adverse effect on our spears performance.

Thought #2: Again pulling from my days as an avid archery hunter and competitive shooter.
a lot of people get hung up on speed alone but the most important factor is actually kinetic energy. The formula to figure kinetic energy is M(mass of spear)x V2(velocity squared). Is there a way to figure the kinetic energy for your test? kinetic energy= penetration.

Last thought: Imagine the potential of a cam type system like a compound bow uses integrated in a roller set up.

ok now all you smart people can have the thread back.

I just wanted to give another update. I ended up back in the hospital with another blood clot and a collapsed lung. I was released after a few more days and have had a few follow up appointments. Turns out that there is no underlying cause for the blood clots and the permanent damage should be minimal. I have to take blood thinners for the next 4 months but can start back to exercising in a few weeks and should be able to be back in the water towards the end of April.

Thank you all for the well wishes and words of advise. I got discharged from the hospital today and sent home with blood thinner. I still don't have any answers yet as to what caused this to happen. I have an appointment next week and should learn more then. All I know is I feel like crap still. Again, thank you all and I will keep you posted.

Dan, I have not dived since I saw you. I was actually headed to the springs the day this happened. It felt like a strained rib muscle at first. But rapidly got worse. My wife took a detour to the ER. I am still waiting on the results from all the blood work to see if it is something internal that caused it. If not then the culprit has to be the long road trips I had taken thru the hollidays.
The pain in my chest has subsided some now. But now there are some things going on with my head that have them concerned that one of the clots have moved.
If I die before I get to shoot my first fish I'm gonna be pissed. If I make it then you can bet your ass I'll do a few things different.
Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I'll keep you posted... or my wife will.

I'm not sure how it happened. I don't think they are going to let me out until they find out.. I think it had somthing to do with a few long road trips but I'm not certain.
    Thanks guys

Hey all. I've been laying in a hospital bed for a few days now. I've got several small blood clots in my left lung. I guess they call it a pulmonary embolism.
Have any of you experienced this? The doc here said he'll have to look into it but says he suspects I won't be able to dive for 3-6 months.
I'm going to find a dive doctor to consult if I make it out of this.
just wondering if you all had any good news for me.
    thanks

Thanks linghunt. I decided to scrap the cooler. my plan is to glue two 2" sheets of Styrofoam together and form a mold that resembles a banks board. I will also put the thin sheet of pvc between the Styrofoam for some added structural integrity. then I will drill and insert bushings for mounting what needs to be mounted. once I get everything dry fit, I will strip it down and apply several coats of fiberglass and then paint.

The damn thing may sink or be too fragile. Its stuff I already have for the most part so its not going to cost me much. Besides...... I like to tinker.

So I am sitting in my shop and looking around I have some sheets of Styrofoam and Fiberglass epoxy. I know you are all going to say that by the time im done with this I should have just bought a float and you are right. Only problem is I like to build things. so my thought is to make a mold from the Styrofoam and cover it with fiberglass. I will reinforce it with either a thin sheet of pvc or make a frame out of small diameter stainless steel rod. The initial problem I can foresee is that I am not sure how I will attach tie downs to it...... I will have to put some more thought into that.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this project I am contemplating. I do value your opinions.
    Thanks
