Thanks Steve. Maybe I'll grab Jim & head down for one of those quick Channel Islands trips....sick avatar BTW. Kyle, just saw the pix from your & Eph's BOLA run-very nice. Thanks to all the others who said "Welcome" too. T

    do that.

long way for home philip and chicago is a long way from either coast. i'm from greece originally but i live in california now. spearing here in america is great, lots more fish than back home, you do any diving in the lakes?

What's up Tommy? How's things back in sf? Next time you guys come down to dive on the peace give me a ring.

looks rather tall which is going to force a tall gun and for one the shoots only 2 bands makes little sense. why not use one of the more proven and lower profile mechs and make a modern low and wide gun? just a though.

dan and stickem, i respect you opinions. i'm not saying that we should not post pics of fish we're proud to show, on the contrary, i love seeing harry posts one of his cuberas or a kid posting his first prized catch. what i am opposed to are pics of decks full of dead fish or more fish than people need.

even though it's perfectly legal here in california for example to shoot three wsb (normally a 20-50# fish) after the beginning of the season should we? and if we do decide that we should, should we post pics?

a little common sense goes a long way, after all the enviros that oppose us are not alone in their opposition of what we do. the environmental movement has many, many layers, yes there are the "tree huggers" on the surface that make most of the noise but there are also lots of wealthy people looking to leave a legacy by supporting a cause, there are corporate interest looking to control a resource, there are politicians that want to score points by latching on to a popular topic. most of these people are very discreet, preferring to provide funds and organization to the front line groups.

this is a high stakes poker game and they are playing it close to the vest looking to exploit every opportunity we provide them and in a country where only half of us vote and of the half that does, most spend little time looking at the facts it's not hard to see why we are loosing the fight.

yes, some in california are commies, liberals or whatever else you want to call them but this is also the state that gave us ronald reagan and dare i say it, richard nixon and most recently arnold who some say could have made a run at the white house even though he wasn't born here if only he kept it in his pants. most of all, california is a trend setter, auto emission laws go back to the 70's here and if you think that it was a bad idea you should have seen los angeles on a summer afternoon in the mid 70's and 80's. sure montana is always going to be different but what happens there effects us here.

the point is we have to be realistic, over harvesting of anything does exist but with a little common sense protection things come back. the wsb is a prime example, years of gill netting did deplete them but since the practice was abolished here in california we are getting more and bigger fish. the mt lion and bobcat population is exploding here, i've recently seen a bobcat on a bike path within the ventura city limits (not to mention the loss of pets and live stock) we need to control the population but we can only do it if we work within a system that allows for a "win-win" situation, both sides have to feel like they got something as well as give up something, doth sides have to feel good about it. unfortunately, extremism is ruling the day on both sides.

in closing, last week i had breakfast with mike gould and terry maas (don't mean to drop names but...), both live here in ventura and both are in the forefront of the mlpa fight. mike told us about the pic in question and both he and terry agreed that it was not a bad thing, i disagreed. i saw mike again yesterday and we talked about the article, again the though it was not a bad thing, i hope he's right, we'll see.

can't say that i disagree with any of the above views but the reality is we live in a place (ca) and at a time where the environmental point of view rules. i think the photo is regrettable, as i think photos of lots of dead fish, lobsters, etc no mater if they're legal or not.

now, we are faced with the possibility of someone completely opposite of the current president being in charge of the ca dfg, nice. keep pics posts to a minimum, show only your closets friends and people you trust, otherwise we are going to pay the price no mater where the pics come from.

    just my 2c.

great material for saving weight, i have a ti road bike and love it but it's not as stiff as people think. i made several hybrids early on using it and found it to flex way more than i though. in fact, it flexed more that aluminum with an extruded rail built in and at the same price as carbon it just didn't make sense to continue. i think for our purposes the only positive other than the "bling" factor is its resistance to corrosion.

ahhh wait a minute, i need to get a calculator:)

don't worry about range, instead work on your technic to get as close to the fish as possible.

weird, other 3/8'' riffe shafts ive seen, as well as, those by mori, kitto, etc. have a step cut into them so they can fit in mechs but all had the square notch. call riffe and talk to jay or julie and don't forget to tell us what they say.

Nice shot and fish, those are very hard to shoot. How do you like the red meat?

bonito makes excellent sashimi imo, the key is to bleed it as soon as you shoot it and serve it as soon as possible. the other way my mom use to prepare it is salt cured, fillet the fish and leave the skin on (never rinse the meat with fresh water), salt the non skin side with good course sea salt, and store in an air tight container (refrigerated of course) for a day. slice thinly and plate, olive oil and lemon to taste, pepper and/or capers also work well. serve with good, fresh bread and the beverage of your choice.

the salted version may last this way for a few days and the meat will get saltier as time passes.
