ps
Come to the OC Spearos mtg tonight. We are going to work on breathing and other techniquesThanks. I wish I could. Mondays are always bad for me.
Is there any worthwhile benefit beyond not making fish scaring bubbles or psychological ones?

From a shallow water black out perspective; how important is is it to re-breath the air in your mask upon ascent?
My understanding is that upon ascent your lungs expand, effectively vacuuming the oxygen out of your system. If this is so, then it makes sense to me that upon ascent re-breathing all the expanding air you have blown into your mask during descent would act to minimize this "vacuuming" effect.
Does anyone have more than just a guess as to how wrong I am?

Nice!
Darren and I both hit 65' at Catalina. It was my personal best and I think his too. The first drop freaked me out! It was the return that spooked me. Second drop was much more relaxed. Clear water sure helps.

I am sooooo jealous. Hopefully I can bag one FINALLY this weekend.
Nice fish.

Really sorry to hear this and thanks for posting the lesson. Could a safety have made a difference here? I know that some guys remove their safety switches but stories like this remind me that I would rather miss a thousand shots due to a safety than have an accident like this happen. Same reason I will never have a loaded gun on a boat. Not preaching here, that's just my personal choice. I always have my safety on and check it before loading and put it on safety when unloading. It also goes on any time Im in the water near another diver within shot range.
Again sorry for your friend and family. RIP.

Welcome Mike. Its kinda nice here.

Damn Alex. You shoot some ugly fish. I don't think I've ever seen one bigger while bow hunting them. Nice catch.

From a spear fishing first point of view - Out.

No subsections.

Interesting. The last time I heard them (And I don't hunt or hear them much so consider that) the vibe I got was like that of an animal that was disturbed and feeling unsure and aggressive; not unlike a dog that is uneasy about a presence on the other side of a fence that it is aware of but unfamiliar with so it lets out a low guttural sound. I really felt like it was directed at me.

Good to see you here. Nice write up.

It has worked for me for 30 years, If I know the fish are near I lay in the sand or reef and talk to them.
One croak per breathold is all I do followed by a wait and see with the gun laying in front of me and my finger on the trigger. Some times you can piss them off if you don't get the sound right..... ask me how I
know.;)
Cheers, DonConsider this a request. Love to hear a good story.

Welcome Alex. Hope we can dive again soon.

Welcome Patrick, I'm sure reach your goals if you can just get in the water.
Good luck.

Very cool examples. The difference is notable. The WSB is slower and deeper while the sargo sound like feeding pigs. I have taken and swam with many sargo and they sound the same when relaxed or speared. Speared sargo are just more excited.

Ha! Darren and I have a trip planned for Santa Barbara Island in two weeks. I really don't give a crap about it so long as people don't talk about it too much. Enough talk might unnerve me. I figure its just part of life. Darren who is the trip leader may think different though. It should be interesting.

Nice video.
