You got that right! My wife wants to know when I'm going next to get more. When I do hope to get as lucky as last time :)

Another reason I'm glad you scored Rob. It relieves the tension at home when you come back with something the wife enjoys eating rather than being gone all day and coming home tired and buzzed:toast::toast::toast:

So, I've been in a slump and screwed up the only shot I had in the past month a couple weeks back and I've been really upset about it. I swore to redeem myself and did. More importantly my buddy Rob who is still prettty new to spearing, but a good bud diver has been wanting me to put him on some fish and all winter I promised I would. The time was upon us and we planned a day and he took off work and Perry got out too. Robs dad live boated us and we hit some spots.

First spot, 10 minutes in Perry has a nice 40lb class fish wrapped up. Rob and I didn't see anything, but big calicos and cudas. We made another dive and didn't see anything again, but heard faint croaking. Water early in the am was COLD at 55.

A quick move to the second spot not far away and I told Rob a new bed that grew up this winter that had some fish earlier in the year and he gave it a run. I swam the other direction and saw nothing. I got back to the boat and knew from the smile that Rob got one. Mid 30s. So stoked for him! He has twin 3 month olds and doesn't get out much. With the incoming tide the water was warming a bit and I felt pretty good about seeing a fish.

Spot 3 and I wanted to check a new bed I've never even dove and looked prime for cbass spawning. 10 minuted in I dropped down and looked down behind me like I do when I first tip my fins. I saw a large tail and all in one motion twisted on my decent and was in pursuit of the 30lbr.. I didn't equalize and at 10 ft while following behind this fish waiting for a clean shot my ear squeeked and it was gone.
I continued into the shallows and spotted another but it was 40 to 50lbs and again was following behind waiting for a clean shot while I spooked another in the upper water column and they were gone. I contiuned hunting and while heading back towards the boat I saw a nice fish shooting straight at me and fast from my left! I swung my 57 inch gun and from the hip with one hand while balancing with my left on the kelp shot her right between the eyes!!!

I'm glad I waited for a good shot and didn't screw it up and wow it felt good to be back on the board. An amazing day, amazing fish, good buddies and limits:)

EDIT: Perrry's fish looks like a beast compared to mine, but it's just he angle of the pic that was taken;) Didn't weigh Rob's or Perry's, but mine was 43lbs.

[quote='Stephan','http://spearfishing.world/forums/index.php?thread/&postID=49527#post49527']Thanks Fuzz: That clears things up a bit. The bigger of the rock fish I saw was actually hovering next to a kelp stock about two to three feet off the bottom. All the others were on rocks. The only reason I paid any note to it is it was the first time I can recall seeing these fish in a spot I had dove several times before and never seen any.

    Thanks.[/QUOT

Steve, I believe you are referring to Sugar or Jonny bass. I could be mistaken, but that's what we call them and they are tasty. I've just stabbed them a few times instead of shooting cause they are so dumb. They taste as good as they are dumb too:crazy:

I did that on my first one. Over a dozen trips until I had a clear shot on a wsb. Felt great after all that hunting and finally getting one. Then that feeling kinda went away with the next fish. Lobsters I still get excited over seeing.

But this year I'm not so interested in shooting any wsb. I'm hoping I'll be able to hold off on the first one I see and really hunt for a big one. That will be my challenge. Although I've said I'd do that in the past and I"ve given in to the temptation of shooting the first 30lb fish I see. I really think this year I'll be able to hunt for a nice sized one.

You keep me informed on how that goes for you;) I personally will kill the first WSB that swims in range most likely depending on the sitiuation and other fish spotted that day. I need some meat in the freezer and get excited as hell for the small ones just like the bigguns anyways.

I've heard of at least one person catching a monster in the past couple months. But I'm still waiting. Last year my waiting paid off with my first wsb dive of the year producing a 57 pound fish within the first 30 minutes of getting in the water. I want to get in another dive like that this year :D

No doubt that would be a good feeling to have the success on your first trip for them, BUT I must say that it feels that much better when you hunt for them and really feel like you earn it! I do think that sometimes I start hunting them too early, but when I get that first fish damn, it feels great! I'm sort of a mad man though.

Yah I'm just having fun diving Laguna while I can. There's still plenty of bugs out there to keep me interested, but by next season I'll be expanding my lobster hunting grounds to the rest of Orange County and with some carpooling LA and San Diego as well.

To be honest I may eventually cut it out completely. I like lobster alright, but really prefer the hunt of some gamefish. I may go here and there for years to come, but I'm not sure it'll be as much as before.

Probably better off just trying to find some cheap discount fares & fly into SFO... my garage is like a dive store anyways with extra belts/weights/guns/gauges/irons/etc. ;)

Or... roadtrip it up with couple buddies. For lings/rf, you can get em down in cambria pretty good. Those are some of best grounds I've seen.

I'm sure when I go I have one buddy that is most definitly gonna want to take the trip with me so maybe driving, but flying doesn't sound too bad either.

Know what you mean, hunting the reefs in Hawaii is my favorite type of diving. Nothing glamorous or huge in size, but it takes a lot of work/skill & a bit of luck to do well on those small skittish fish. Feels like I really earned it... in contrast to most of my WSB diving, where I feel like I just walked into a cow pasture & plugged one. :D

Ling is supposed to be open already, but DFG held it up... so looks like the traditional 4/1 opener. Drop me a line if you come up, would be happy to play dive guide. I've seen a lot of big ones this year, but the larger ones are all holed up pretty good (15-25# range).

I was thinking it was supposed to be, but not sure. I may take you up on that I would think the opener would be a great time to go depending on conditions. How far north do you dive from Orange Co. for those things? (hours) I don't really know the Nothern Coast all that well.
