Miguel it's not the barred surf perch that look like sargo, it's the pile perch. The bar on the pile perch is a bit farther back on the dorsal fin to anal fin. On the sargo it's further up. Sargo's have a fat head and look just like a rounder spotfin croaker. Unfortunately both the pile perch and sargo are in pretty much the same area.

Nice Fish!
Damn John, you need to come out here more often, you are mistaking sand bass for sargo

Aww man Ron, sorry to hear that, I was hoping to see you out killing it on your twin vee :(. I'll give you a call the next time I got a spot!
-
Man Ron I hear you, it has been over a month since I was there last (conditions had been shitty then and also the prior two months I've been hitting it) so it was a really fun time out there and all the calicos you wanted. Too bad about the yellows, I just got my gil gun back and got a wong ono as well I wanted to try out.

Hey Ron, Yah here's the conditions:
Flat crossing with small chop, small swell. Wind about 10 knots am, 15 knots pm. Temp 65 degrees on surface, slightly cooler as you headed to west end. Vis about 25-40 feet, much much better than the last few months. Tons of calicos around, but no yellowtail or wsb sightings. Saw several soupfin sharks in the shallows and of course the black sea bass. Lots of barracuda around as well, some big bonita seen but not tonnage.
A fun trip, not crowded at the islands at all and much better than what I've been hearing about locally.

Anyone have any conditions/vis/temp reports for catalina? If not I'll post it up when I get back later in the week.

Congrats on your first hali, I'm sure it won't be your last!
I think your y shaped organs are the paired ovaries loaded with eggs.

Thanks guys, I'm hoping to try it out next week. Line release is on the right side of the gun, you can't see it from the shot I took. There is a rob allen composite reel post on the bottom, I figured out the hard way it's easier having posts with a reel that you can switch out rather than buying reels/line for each gun. However I rarely use reels anymore and have switched to 100' floatlines with a 10' bungee on the end.
Gil temporarily stopped making guns and will hopefully be back in action soon.

I might not be able to shoot fish, but damn at least I look good doing it I got this from gil (spear-diver guns) a while ago and just started rigging it. So Cal Tracker II with green/black stain that I requested. 59" gun, 60" 5/16" shaft from dean at vector marine with a mori slip tip , I'm hoping to string some yellowtail and maybe a late wsb soon. I'm rigging it up for hawaiian breakaway as we speak...

Wow beautiful fish! Congrats!

Ahem you sure don't want to have to move all that freedive/spear stuff Don, why you should just let me have it so you don't have to bother with putting it all away ;).
Hope the move went well!

wow nice trip Paul, the sushi looks amazing too!

Shitty vis, maybe 25 at best spots on the backside. Mid island to east end probably closer to 10-15 feet. Water is warm 67 plus. Calicos and cuda abundant, no wsb or yt seen underwater. Some bait but not as epic as it was earlier in the season, this has been the worst season I've had yet. It was still a fun day but if your boat eats gas you might want to stay back.

I saw that video on another forum, hilarious, what program did you use to animate it Brian?

I just read up on this one, this has been the biggest gws year I've ever experienced, I'm glad that guy didn't get hurt. The worst is I'm pretty sure someone's going to get bit this year.

I've blown two "gimme" shots from the bottom up, I just can't get the angle right. I've also blown shots where the kelp barely hit my slip tip, it's amazing how much a slight difference in angle makes.

Nice flatty! That other fish is a mullet, I've eaten them before as well. Believe it or not it was decent sashimi.
