    Roller
    2x22" bands plus 2x2" wishbones
42" top from notch to roller
    30" bottom hook to roller
    So 22" elongated to 70" = 318%
    Force x 2 pulled over 42" length
    Therefore, 84" of pull.

    MGS
    2x26" bands with 3" wishbones
    40" and 43"
    So 13" elongated to 39" and 42" = 300% and 320%
    14" relaxed
    Force pulled over 26"(band 1) x 2, and 29"(band 2) x 2.
    Therefore, 110" of pull.

caveat: the second band on a double banded gun doesn't double the power

Here's where I disagree. A better diver, no. A better Spearfisherman, YES! And this is because of the less recoil. If your form is sloppy, like a bent elbow or weak grip or shooting sideways or hip shooting, the decreased recoil improves accuracy. From my experience, my roller guns( I shoot three different ones) have the same or slightly less power than my Wong MGS, but are definitely more accurate, IN MY HANDS.

I shoot my 57" roller gun 90% of the time. I'm most used to it. But when I shoot on scuba, a roller is too slow to reload. So I switch to my Wong MGS free shaft gun. I usually end up only loading a single band because the recoil from the two bands makes me very inaccurate. I'm sure with better form and a stronger grip, I could adjust to it. But I only scuba a few times a year.

Anyway, I'm satisfied with my test video. The roller velocity is very close to the double band gun and that's all I need to know. I've shot 50lb AJ at 20" with my rollers no problem. And it locks out 2 wraps of line. And it shoots like a laser beam!

If anyone wants to shoot one, come on over to Clearwater. As soon as it's calm out, I'll be diving as much as possible getting ready for States and Nationals this year.

The bands are the same diameter, 5/8". I'll measure their length tonight.

I was sitting with my back against the pool wall and held the loaded guns in each hand at my side with the butts against the wall. I tried to pull the triggers simultaneously.

Dan, I wasn't going to do a penetration test. I assume with the same weight shaft, the penetration should be proportional to the velocity ratio. Penetration is really momentum which is mass times velocity.

As to recoil, they seemed similar to me in strength. But the double banded gun had some muzzle flip, the shaft actually shot out of the water on the recoil test with the Wong MGS.

Gun on left: 57" custom double action roller with 57"-5/16" shaft

Gun on right: 57" Wong MGS with 2- 5/8" bands and 57"-5/16" shaft

I'll try to get some video in my pool.

I've got 2 double action rollers that are identical to my Wong MGS guns.

Should I use bands with 350% pull ratio?

Dan just to be clear. You are saying that a roller gun offsets recoil marginally, reason I want clarification is everyone who has used a GOOD one says significant reduction and significantly smoother shot. Having never used or even seen one I take what you guys say very serious, I would hate to spend money on a new gun to find out it is crap. So have you much experience with shooting roller guns?

I do. And the recoil is almost nil.
And 2 of my 3 rollerguns weigh a few ounces more than a normal gun of the same length. The only added weight is the Neptonics rollers and 2 additional line anchors. And no more bulky than a double banded counterpart.

Furthermore, my reloading time is no longer than loading a double banded gun of the same length. And during a routine 1-2 minute surface interval, I don't see any issues with loading time.

Some people are set in their ways. But rollerguns are the future for breathhold Spearfishing. Mark my words. I won't be going back to a conventional gun. I use a Wong MGS if I'm shooting on scuba and I miss my rollerguns immediately when free shafting that gun.

I have 3 roller guns, and I'm very impressed. They are the most accurate guns I've ever shot. The minimal recoil is the key.

The reload times are no longer than a double banded gun.

I just dove the SPO all day last Saturday using a 57" wood custom rollergun. We started on a few wrecks in 70-80fsw and worked out way in to 30fsw. I made 86 drops. I shot a cobia, Cuda, permit, gags, mangrove snapper, hogfish. And I stoned the Cobia/permit/gag/Cuda with my first 4 shots.

Try one for a day if you get a chance.

If anyone wants to come shoot mine, Dan??, let me know. I'm in the Clearwater FL area. Hit me up.

You guys sure get some nice gags over there. It would be nice if we could get them as consistently as you do in freediving depths. The scubaroos can get some nice ones deep but it's rare to get such quality fish for us without going past 100'. Of course we don't have a lot of good natural structure in shallow depths and even if we did, the viz is usually horrible.

We have a few wrecks in 50-80' but more often than not you can't see your hand in front of your face.

The two gags I shot with my son in the pic were on a small rock pile in 27fsw. 15.5lbs each.

Dan, yes. That's my son. 5 1/2 years old.
