Stopped at a rock pile in 30' on 7/10, made 5 drops:

So let me get this straight.
They were diving 100' deep with less than 2 foot of vis in 40 degree water! WTF?
And he shot 5 little fish each day to win.
Can't they find a better place to hold the competition??

Sun half day catch, 3 guys on the boat each day.

Sat Gags.

Seas both Sat and Sun were 2-3 mixed swell wind chop with whitecaps. Very confused seas but manageable.
Water temp is mid 80s.
We dove just north of CW Sat, and straight out Clearwater pass Sun.
Vis inside of 35fsw was terrible. It got gradually better from 40-60, and was better a little north. Up to 30' vis in 55fsw north of CW.
Only managed a few hogs Sat, and 1 hog Sunday. Limited on gags easily both days by noon. Also got a few nice red grouper in 45-50fsw.
Only saw one shark and he didn't bother us. No Cobia, but we only hit one wreck.

Fish filets, in my freezer.
I tend to buy zip ties all the time.

What's the deal with Instagram? Haven't used it yet.

Reel. Pulled me around for a few minutes. First fish I couldn't turn at all. I even had to grab my gun and swim under the anchor line.
Finally my dive buddy got a second shot in him. But he kept fighting for a while.C

76lb personal best Cobia. PB fish overall for me.
And shot with my 48" single action DS roller gun.

Vis is almost top to bottom off Anclote from 25fsw out to 42fsw. You could see the dark spot or ledge outline from the surface. Couldn't really make out fish.
Water temp 71 on surface. Time for a 3mm suit.
Gags were everywhere. Of course. Hogs were scarce, picked up one nice one every other ledge. Missed a huge red grouper in 26'.
So I was hog hunting and shooting my 48' DS single action roller gun....
and this beast showed up!

As Dan raised the issue of a double band gun, I tried the same diagrammatic approach to comparing one to a rollergun of the same spear and stock length.
I like the significant recoil reduction for around the same power as 2 bands.
What happens when the roller band is pulled even further back on the bottom? Like to 4x stretch?

Don't knock a roller gun til you try a good one.
I love my roller gun for its lack of recoil and therefore incredible accuracy.
Its also more versatile with 3 loading tabs for different power configurstions. And power? Trust me, I had to lengthen the band because I was bending shafts shooting thru fish into the bottom, there is no lack of power.
Any of you guys make it to Clearwater, let me know. We'll go test shoot them, into a bunch of fish no doubt.

Looks almost like a scamp. Nice job.

I hate hybrids, and I've owned 2 and shot 3. And I dive with GR who loves them.
First, I have trouble aiming them. Second, I have trouble dealing with the kick when you power them up.
I prefer a solid wood enclosed track gun with minimal kick. Or better yet a roller gun.
I just ordered a Merou roller muzzle that I plan on mounting to the front of a teak gun.

Nice job. I love the taste of Cobia.

Assuming I have the Freedive recovery vest (FRV), would I manually inflate the vest and try to horse the beast to the surface? Then if I come close to blacking out, it would already be inflated.
I'll have to think about that one.
