Powerhead or spearhead, I believe that the big shark that will get you, will blind side you with a big hit. You won't see it coming. A bazooka isn't going to help you then.

The curious ones that come in a circle and you can poke….or shoot, maybe a big tiger would keep working it's way in but….

Just don't think about it. Worry more about wrecking your car.

    exactly my thoughts

Before moving from South Florida to Singapore in 2002 - me and a friend made a spearfishing trip in his boat where he drove and I dove. Very easy to lose track (no GPS) of exactly where you are. We got busted for illegally spearfishing in restricted areas of Key Largo. Fortunately I hadn't seen anything big enough to spear and had by passed several Gags and Muttens that may have been legal. $200.00 fine regardless of not having a fish in the boat but I was in the water with a loaded speargun when busted.

Getting harder on both coasts, primarily Florida South East and California.

The future looks tougher for spearos :frustrated1::frustrated1:

ah the dreaded 300' depth area which obviously extends more then the normal 3 mile law  they have a small cesna that flies over reporting people spearing now

Don't be too worried about the ones you can see, the ones that get you are the the ones you never saw coming. Ive had more trouble with goliath groupers then sharks as far as being pesky and taking fish.

Thats the hardest part of spearfishing...deciding which way to swim!!

Also as far as shallow hunting goes...sometimes I feel like its better to hang around and work one area and other times I drift up and down the reef. Depends on what I'm seeing. I also tend to have better luck in the mornings and afternoons vs mid-day.

I have noticed the same thing, I shoot more fish early or late in the day, however the bigger fish I have shot have been mid day and shallower. The trick of sifting some sand up works, when wrestling lobster out of holes I always get a curious grouper or mutton come to investigate and present a good shot.

I have several mid to large center console we can use, There is a place down the street from me that makes plaques as well. I would think the best way would be to have a bronze plaque made and embed it in concrete.

Just got on here to see how you guys did over the weekend with the calm seas and my heart sank when I saw "we lost one of our own today" I have never met Nate but it really hit home for me to see one of the regulars on here pass away, my condolence to the family.... what a tragedy.

I use a reel most of the times, less tangles with other float lines, don't have to worry about it getting caught in a prop, less drag, wont snag on structure (reef, wrecks etc..) and whats more annoying then breathing up properly and ascending only to feel that tug of a tangled line, seaweed etc.. When diving with less experienced guys I use a float even if its inconvenient, especially if its a new guy behind the wheel, I have been lost in the water due the captain not realizing the anchor had pulled and he had drifted away :frustrated1:

Just seeing a great white would make my hair stand on end but in reality they're ambush hunters. Sneak up and give a life ending bite/blow to the intended prey. It does seem like this one saw an easy snack, like a stringer.

It'd be great to hear the guy's story after the dive. The safety stop must have been pretty stressful….to say the least.

What would happen if you tried to put a shaft into its eye? It seemed pretty close and moving slow. I hope I never have to find out. :D

same thing I thought, imagine being on the surface in blue water and seeing that big guy coming up straight at you like air jaws :@
