Nice!
But this thread is about Steven....:rolleyes1:
Why don't you open a new greek thread?
It's so Steven gets jealous and moves back to Florida to dive with me.

Wow. A mutton that big probably wasn't dumb. How'd you get him? :thumbsup2:
I dove down to my favorite area where I know there is good size muttons. I started my descent and before I reached the bottom, I was observing this baby turtle on the bottom. It had my complete attention. I look to my right and I see a nice size mutton about 12+lbs. I'm like "oh shit" because I let him get too close and now I will have a more difficult shot. As I was about to pull the trigger on this 12lb + mutton I see another mutton sprinting for me. I turned my gun towards him and he slammed on the brakes and turned away in a quick fashion. I didn't have the shot I wanted as I was not lined up because he came in so fast. I turned my gun towards him, and he was beginning to swim away. I made two soft kicks to get in decent range and raised my gun to eye level and fired. The shot was not as easy as it should have been if I was more ready. But the shot was perfect! It hit center body and came out in the face area. It was a perfect shot considering what I had to aim at when he was swimming away.
I always weigh my big muttons. The scale never lies. My eyes do.

I went diving yesterday. I haven't been in the water in like 4 months. It was so difficult to stay deep, but I still managed a few nice fish. 16 lb Mutton (weighed)

Enjoyed your insight, I also found the shallow water diving being made to look like deep drops entertaining, but the lads did well and never let up
It even got my heart pumping...lol. It was great video and totally entertaining from start to end. Some vids are :boring1:

Greek what makes you think they were novices? Just curious as to your thinking, I know your a underwater ninja... so not taking the piss
My take was I saw some decent snapper on their stringer, and with the equipment they had i thought they were pretty good at landing that beast fish. First shot was a good shot as well, bad luck he didnt stone it, maybe as the fish wasnt going anywhere he could have breathed up again in that shallow water before the first shot, and taken more time with the first shot, maybe i guess, but hard for me to judge not being there. It's about 20ft max deep in crystal clear water, and they need to relax. They are having a hard time holding their breath. There is way too much panic as they are having a hard time diving down. Yes the fish is big.
The guy who places the 2nd shot sprints back up to top as if it was a super long deep dive. Take a little more time aiming that 2nd shot, and that fish could be pulled right out away from rocks.
These are things that we all have done. It still is a great video, and I am not taking anything away from it.

I love it when novice divers land a monster fish! It's so entertaining.

That will teach you to use a screw on tip

I usually go during the week. I havent been in a while but send me a pm if you can go diving during the week.

I think you were close enough for that fish. You do not need to get closer on spooky fish like Cubera. Another foot closer and you could have spooked that fish. The shot was downward and your gun has lots of power that way. Recessed flopper on a 7.5 - 8mm spear still has lots of steel.
What size gun do you have?
140 x 7mm shaft does not have that much weight. It is not a problem for muttons, but i think it is too light for Cuberas.
That shot looked no further than 12ft from speartip. I am pretty good at judging it with all the video editing I do.
Marco- I am still thinking about the Mutton that the shark ate.... I bet this will stick with you for a while! LOL. Man, I love spearfishing!

Hi Harry! Nice to see you around.
I do have a wooden gun with a heavier shaft. But I rarely use it. And if I take it out, won't be with murky water like it was.
I think that with these fish that have such a hard skull, a body shot is a best choice, but when you have the possibility to stone it with a head shot, your instinct aims there. ...
After that episode, I sharpened the tip until it cut and shortened the bands a couple inches. Obviously the flopper didn't pass through.
My friend thinks he is not going to die. I think it will. It was coming up after a short fight (as most cuberas) and took off when it was just 30 feet below me. If you see the shot placement, it was in the middle of his head. Just a matter of millimeters to touch the brain.
I'm sad.
The shot was perfect. The shaft is simply not heavy enough to pass through a big fish. Now, add the sharpness of tip, and the flopper that is not recessed plays a huge factor. The part of the flopper that sticks out has to push through bones on head shots. So you either have to have a heavier shaft or a recessed flopper. Both is great to have
I don't think the fish will die.
My wooden gun would have passed that fish without question but it carries a heavier shaft and fires shaft at higher velocity. Railguns have their limitations because of the mass they have. They can't fire a heavy shaft. It's all fine and dandy until you need the power like on a Cuberas head.

If you had a wooden gun that can take a heavier shaft, it wouldn't have happened.
I lost huge fish but usually to sharks.

nice cobia! that prehistoric mutton will be in Greekdiver's head for a while, it happens to me when i miss a really nice fish!
Yes its still in my head and I still watch the video at least a couple times a day.
I was diving down and I passed a large shark but kept on going. Before I landed on the bottom, the fish started swimming away from me. At first glance, i thought it was a Cubera or Dog Snapper. It was just too big and wide for my brain to register mutton. After it started moving away from me, and I knew it was a mutton. I waited on the bottom hoping it would eventually circle back. And it did! I placed a very good shot on fish and then the shark appeared. I pulled up the line and my spear was broken.
I uploaded pics to facebook. Ill post pics after I get back to work.

It is just huge!!!!!
I'd say over 20 lbs to be very conservative. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 25 lb ++

Good stuff. I love the octopus parts in the video! "get off my arm!"

I need go pros everywhere!

I am going back to gun cam. I move my head too much while hunting. I lose lots of footage.
I will probably lose other footage going to gun cam as well.
