I think this is a case where diving depth plays a role. Not me! But many east coast divers consider 70 to be a normal hunting range I like 35 personally hahaha

70ft in warm blue water with a spotter is one thing. 70ft in 10 foot vis and icy thermoclines gets old real quick...buddy goes down and you have no idea which way he went. Wreck alley in San Diego is primarily a recreational scuba destination, there's better structure elsewhere.

I just saw a guy on Craigslist San Diego who has many of these F470 for sale with no floors and repairs needed to them but going for only $150....might be worth it for a project or to use for parts.
15.5' ZODIAC F470 INFLATABLE PONTOON BOAT

I was especially tempted, because the last time I was on my local charter I counted 30 patches on their zodiac and this was only going down the one side! they use the snot out of that thing too.

We also have paddy hopping season, which is bluewater diving with up to 100' foot vis. Winter is Lobster season = Fun. We have Island trips (nados, SCI, Cat.) which = better conditions. A road trip to the North puts you in Abalone territory. Road trip to the south is a baja adventure. 5mil works for year round. I do use a 7mil top to stay comfortable all day long in the winter.
MLPA hasn't closed anything yet down here and is in the courts right now. Need all the help we can get on our side. Spearos fought hard in San Diego and what they want to take isn't as bad as it could of been. Though we are still poised to lose the grounds I grew up diving in ....South La Jolla.

Cool I looked at the Hilton web site ....I going to look at some other pads down there.

    Cheers, Don

I know Marina Cortez has some different house boat type rentals. It's walking distance to the East a couple hundred yards. Harbor Island West marina is directly behind J&J as seen on the Picture on this page.

Here's one from Marina Cortez. I know there's others that aren't so fancy, more like traditonal houseboats. There's a hot tub and pool.:drink1:

Greetings everyone!

My name is Pete Gutkowski diving out of San Diego, CA. I grew up with a view of the Coronado Islands and the Tijuana bullring by the sea right outside my seagreen colored shuttered bedroom windows. I was also very lucky to have a 10' foot deep pool as a kid and don't even remember learning to swim, but I do remember sitting on the bottom holding my breath as long as I could. My parents would fight a lot and it was a pure escape for me. I've been Spearfishing since the early 80's. I would bum rides with older buddies to go surfing and fortunately a buddies dad had a garage full of spearguns. It was a no brainer to go diving when the surf was flat. I put a lot of hours in the water back then.
I got out of the sport for awhile to go to Art School in the Bay Area and put all my energy into my career which started out as movie special effects but ending up as Art Restoration. I was also in and out of the hospital for a period of 4 years with Ulcerative colitis. Finally, the doctors just removed all my large intestines and I'm as good as new now.
I realized when my son was born in 2001 that I would not have much free time anymore and needed to get back to the single one thing that I loved to do. The thing that would keep me centered and recharge my batteries the most. So, I started diving the kelp again that year via kayak.
I usually dive the La Jolla and Pt. Loma areas as well as the Cornados, Catalina and SCI when I can catch a ride. Whenever I do catch a ride, I always bring a good attitude, excellent grub, ice and Gas money plus some extra towards maintenance. I'm scuba and CPR certified. I have studied the coursework from two different advanced freediving courses but have not dedicated the time and money to taking one yet.
I'm typically kind of a private person and have never been one too big on posting reports, I like the vibe over here, so I'm going to try a little harder this year.

    Dive safe and Good hunting!
    Pete
