June 2, 2010 - Diver who died was from Miami
Diver who died was from Miami. It was 24-year-old Ignel Gonzalez of Miami who died spear fishing Monday about five miles off Bahia Honda State Park. Family members of Gonzalez, who lived at 11227 NW Sixth St., were notified Tuesday, detectives said.
Gonzalez was free diving from a private boat with two friends from Miami when he and one of the friends speared a grouper in about 35 feet of water and had trouble landing it. Both were taking turns diving down and trying to wrestle the fish out of some rocks when Gonzalez didn't resurface from one attempt. The friends pulled him aboard, tried CPR, and met paramedics at the park, but Gonzalez was pronounced dead at Fishermen's Hospital.
