Cork - properties and where to buy

  • cork
    noun
A buoyant, light brown substance obtained from the outer layer of the bark of the cork oak.

This would indicate to me that there's a limit on available size of a cork piece? I'm thinking of making a specific float out of it. Does anyone know its properties as far as workability with tools, specifically a hole saw? What's the biggest piece I could buy and where?

Is it even worth it or are there synthetic materials that will do the job better past the aesthetic factor?

  • Home depot/lowes sells sheets of it up to 1/2 inch thickness. We use it for soundproofing floors. It is very crumbly so getting a smooth finish might be tough but I never sanded or cut it before. What about balsa or foam?
