Paddy Hopping 7-20

  • Well we left for Catalina on Sunday morning 7-18, 5AM. I hit around 25 of the most beautiful paddys ever. Dove every one. The first was about 10 miles out of Oceanside that held 2 nice yellows. Went in for the kill and they split.:wtf1: I tried all the tricks I had, but they never showed back. Oh well, if this is my first paddy, imagine what the rest will be like. After all, I have around 40 miles worth of paddys ahead of me. Water was 67, and glassy.

Those would be the only Yellowtail I would see the rest of the day. Some of the paddys were the size of a truck. Easy to spot. Lots of birds on them, lots of bait and jellyfish at every stop. Water started to get colder north of the 181. We zigzaged all over the place. A friend of mine went to San Clemente Island and had the same results. We later talked at Catalina on Monday. I dove the Island a little and spotted some nice sheepshead and Calicos. No shots taken.

Well, we headed back yesterday, 7-20. Same result on the way home. All paddys were dry. Pure glass and little swell if any. We were also running downhill so it was a great ride.

We went to Catalina for a little vacation with the wives. They took the Cat Express both ways outta Dana Point, so the diving was a plus. Still, I was expecting some YT for BBQ when we got there. Oh well, we had a great vacation with great friends.

This is the 4th run offshore out of Oceanside in July for no love. I'm gonna wait till August. Then hit Mexican waters out of SD.

  • Thanks for the report man. Sorry you didn't get any fish, but at least you saw them. It seems that way a lot of times too. You get in the water and see fish and think wow, it's gonna be a good day and never see another. I've been on too may of those trips. Hook and line too.

    Over seabass hunting....
