  • A 16-year-old boy was shot near the neck with a speargun by his friend this afternoon as a boat was towing the teens on a rope near Palm Beach Shores, authorities said.

The bleeding teenager was brought into the Sailfish Marina about 4:30 p.m. and rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center, where an update on his condition wasn't immediately available.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said three 16-year-old boys were boating in the Lake Worth inlet when the teen was speared.

She said one boy was driving the boat and the other two were holding ropes and trailing behind the boat with spear guns at the ready. One boy's spear gun fired, apparently by accident, and the spear struck the other boy, Barbera said.

The teens flagged down a sheriff's marine unit deputy, who escorted them back to shore.
