Vote no on Prop 21- it taxes you and gives $25 million to the MLPA!!!

  • I know this is a political issue, but this issue impacts every spearo in California.

Prop 21 the "Park Pass Proposition" not only increases your car tax by $18, but it also uses part of this tax revenue to fund the newly created MLPA fishing closure zones in California by at least $25 million. This is according to DFG Commissioner Sutton.

For those that don't know the MLPA stands for Marine Life Protection Act. This act is already in the process of creating permanent fishing closure zones throughout California. Everyone that's gotten involved in this process can tell you how corrupt and backhanded it's been. Please don't support these misguided closures. Vote no on Prop 21! Say no to fishing closures!

No worry's Daniel about being political, this effects Cali speros as you pointed out. Voters need to really read the fine print on issues. Many voted for MLPA zones unknowingly in 1999 when it was buried in the Clean Water Act..... and we all wanted clean water back then so the young White Sea Bass we were raising in the grow out pens would have a clean harbor to swim from. Keep up the good fight Daniel.
Thanks for your help and stewardship mate. Your most likely in San Diego at the F+G meeting as I write this. Sorry I cannot join you today.:(

Here is the live link on the MLPA meeting. The opposition to our speros bused in ton of school kids to fill chairs
and show support to the MLPA. Free pizza and a day of from school goes along way to get '' supporters".
As it did in a F=G meeting earlier this year. Many of the kids I spore to had no cue of that the outcome would stop the families from fishing from the beach in almost all areas in Laguna Beach and other vast areas of our coast line.

  • don,

you're right about the school districts bussing in totally clueless kids to these events. i was at the last shindig in long beach, and it was hideous to see how the kids were being used as pawns at that event. a few of the guys from our side struck up conversations with a lot of them, asking if they knew any of the details as to why they were there.

all of them gave " we wanna save the fishes" answers, or more prevalently the "i dunno" answer. clearly being taken advantage of by their idealogically driven teachers and school districts. it really gave me a sinking feeling about the future of the education system here in california.

i felt terrible i couldn't attend today's meeting, but no one but me is going to make my mortgage payment, so i gotta do what i gotta do. i hope everyone on our side made their feelings known, but at the same time, i can't feel we are collectively pissing up a rope.

sorry for the political rant everyone.

    stinks like pee

  • i usually vote no on every prop unless i fully understand it and there are not that many that i do understand because they are written to deceive us. things are so f###ed up, there is such a need to fund our blooded bureaucracy they will stop at nothing.

we recently bought a house in ventura and plan on moving in after this school year is over because i got tired of the bullshit that goes on in "liberal" san francisco and i'm as liberal as billy mac myself.

i loved the fact that ventura is a quite, little town on the beach, with a slower pace. the fact that's it's inexpensive and unpretentious and best of all had no parking meters. coming from sf where you have to stuff a handful of quarters in the meter just to go to starbucks that was a big thing for me.

well, we were down last weekend looking at schools and wtf? parking meters on main street? nice start but it gets worst, i just received the first property tax bill and was shocked to find out that the house was appraised at 100k over what we paid for it because that was their assessment. since when did the city of ventura get into the real estate business?

the most part, people in government, be it city, state or federal are so entrenched in their positions the will use everything in their possession to maintain the status quo and i see nothing in the future that will change that from either democrats or republicans because we the people are so entrenched in our positions as either democrats or republicans we will always vote along our party lines and that is the most effective weapon they have against up.

    rant over, back to spearing.

  • Thanks for posting this up Daniel, until you gave the heads up I had no idea. I forgot to keep in mind that the cuter and more emotional the commercials the worse whatever they want you to vote for is. Good issues have facts, bad ones have cute bunnies that might die if you don't vote for them. Kind of like the mlpa's :angry5:

That's probably the most astute political comment I've heard all year...

  • Tom don't worry about not making it to this meeting. If they really wanted to make this an open process for the public they wouldn't put the meetings in the middle of a weekday. It just makes it impossible for most working people to show up and voice their opinion. And they know it.

Steve, just be sure to watch it when you vote no on the Propositions. Sometimes a "No" vote is a "Yes" when they word the propositions around to try to fool people.

Daniel, anything we can do from FL? letters? comments?

You could send in letters if you want. Email them to the Department of Fish and Game Commissioners here fgc@fgc.ca.gov

But really we've got a stacked deck thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger appointing pro MLPA commissioners to the DFG. As it stands 3 DFG commissioners are 100% for the MLPA, 1 commissioner is fully against it, and 1 is slightly against it. So voting will always be pro MLPA by a vote of 3 to 2.

Yah I was there. It was torture listening to those brainwashed students talk to the commissioners. The students had no real clue on the issue. The children were just told that the fish are in danger and they need protection. And as a kid of course you're going to side with the whole "save the whales mentality" instead of looking further into the issue to understand what it really is about. It was very despicable of the pro environmental people to use mindless children to forward their agenda. :angry5:

Glad I posted this then. And I totally agree that when a proposition has to rely on cute or emotional feelings to persuade the audience, you know it can't be good.

  • It was definitely torture to listen to some of the comments. I couldn't make the meeting (really bummed, first one I've missed in over a year) but was able to watch some of it and catch the students talking about dynamite fishing the coral reefs here in CA.

  • no one but me is going to make my mortgage payment, so i gotta do what i gotta do.

Oh, not true my friend.;) This is Kalifornia, and the answer for everything is "Let the government pay for it." :rolleyes1:

Funny (not in a ha ha way) when we were attending all these meetings in Sacramento for the North/Central MPA's the last couple years, the question on everyone's tongue was "How is the State going to afford the estimated $40mil anual price tag to implement these closures when we're already $20+billion in the hole?!?!" Guess we got our answer in the form of this ballott measure.

Won't it be great? We can go to any State Park we like and get in for FREE!! :excited1:
Too bad we won't be allowed to fish while we're there :angry5:

  • Roger that Rich, I fixed my typo from last night.

    Cheers, Don

Might want to check that typo again Don. It should add up to 100%

But on a side note I'm stoked prop 21 failed :thumbsup2: Feels like Christmas came early and I got just what I wanted :D

Thanks.... That's what I get for using my kids PS3 for a lap top before coffee after 3 hr sleep.:D
When I saw that cute furry fox in the Pro prop 21 ad I thought we were dead in the water.

Speaking of water, lets get in a shore dive next week if the timing is right PM me. I should have my fart gun blowing bubbles by than.

  • Epic fail on the enviro's part, even with all the fluffy bunny commercials people still weren't buying it :D

I wonder what hail mary long shot Sutton's going to use to justify the MLPA's now, maybe he'll open with "so we're all going to pitch in for lottery tickets".
