It's lobster season again

  • Wasn't planning on diving last tonight (November 5), but Tailsurfer said he was going for bugs so I decided to head out as well.

As we pulled up to the spot we immediately noticed the bright lights of three squid boats anchored up in front of our dive spot. "Weird," I thought the squid boats had hit their maximum quota for the year. Oh well I guess not.

The air temp was a frigid 50 degrees so I quickly turned back to my car to suit up. But as soon as I opened my car door my dive light flew out and broke on the street. "Welll that sucks!" Without a dive light I told Josh I had to bail on the dive. That bummed him out pretty bad.

Josh handed me his spare light and I knew I couldn't ditch him now :rolleyes1: Next Josh finds an old dive light I had lying around my car and zip ties the two together making a twin beam setup. Haha it was almost brighter than Josh's main light

So with that fixed we jumped in the water and....

The vis was pretty good. At least 12ft, maybe 15ft. Surge was strong. And the waves managed to smack me in the face more than a few times at this spot. But that's just part of diving.

First legal bug I spotted was halfway outside a small hole that was just large enough for him to fit inside. As soon as that bug saw my light it started the backwards crawl. By the time I reached him his carapace was already safely inside the hole so all I could do was grab for its face. Got a good grip and yanked him right out of his hole. After throwing him in my bug bag I was just glad to get the skunk off for the night.

Later... as I was floating next to a bundle of kelp, breathing up and getting ready to dive down 15ft to the rocky reef below, I glanced over to my right and saw a thick looking lobster clinging on to a kelp strand only a foot under the surface. Score! (I thought) Without shinning my light directly at him I swam over and just plucked him right off the kelp. Hollered over to Josh to come check out my bug. He swore I was lying to him and said I pulled that from guy off reef :D, but then he started looking around and found his own lobster clinging to the kelp. Unfortunately his was short so it had to go. But that wasn't the only one I found. Later that night I spotted 3 more lobsters clinging to the kelp just a couple feet from the surface (all short unfortunately).

Just another fun night in Laguna :thumbsup2: Total count was 8 bugs between Josh and me. Here's a quick pic of my catch.

Oh and I did see a small 20 inch seabass swim by on the dive if that means anything.

  • Great report, nice bugs mate. The squid boats just pulled of the spot a hour ago, and there is one south around the next point.
Rain just stopped in LB shore line is a little stirred up but better on the outside.
Now stay out of my parking spot.;)
    Cheers, Don

  • Okay. That would freak me out. I find lobs to be way too close to spiders for me to trust them at all. I would not be able to handle that well. Hahaha. Sweet limit

The one on my head was trying it's best to gouge out my eyeball. I don't think many people would be comfortable with that :D
