Band question for a bluewater gun

  • I'm going to be using a 170-190cm 8mm slip tip shaft on my new bluewater gun. I plan on using Dan's 16mm small ID bands. Will I need 3 or 4 bands to make it deadly at 20'? I was planning on drilling individual band holes and offsetting them so the bands stack nicer. Is that a good idea or should I just cut a slot?

  • Is it a deep open track ?
3 band is more then enough, just get closer so you can pick your spot.

  • What Don says is true. I think a 3 Band Gun is possibly more accurate, but I like to add that 4th Band on a True Bluewater Enclosed Track Gun. 3 Hot, fresh bands will due the trick and be accurate, but over time, the 4th band will make a difference as the bands age. The other day I nailed a Wahoo with only Two bands on a Bluewater Gun as I was unloading and a group rushed up to me.. But, more often than not, in the Blue things have a tendency to be bigger and further and that extra bit of push can make the difference. I'd go with a Slot for 4, you can always remove one band.

  • 3 20 would be way too much! 3 16mm with a 8 mm shaft should be a good combo. make them a little tight and it will shoot smooth. I have a shorter gun with 3 14mm bands and a 8mm shaft and it has almost zero recoil but is much shorter than a true blue water gun. If I wanted to go off shore with it I could easily power it up with 3 16mm bands but as it is its laser accurate to about 15' and I havnt tried farther than that and dont want to on any reef fish.

  • It is going to be enclosed track. Would 3 20mm bands be better or would it be overkill?

Yes. but I do use 4 tight 5/8 when I shoot blue water in baja pushing 3/8 shaft and wire rope.(cable).

  • 4 x 16mm would be just about right. 3 x 2Omm is not a great combination.. 2Omm bands kick like a mule, and I can imagine the muscular stalemates involved with Loading a 2Omm band on a Long Gun... Cut the Slot for 4 bands. You can always take one off.
