Slip-tip recommendations please

  • I've been looking around and pricing slip-tips for my build. Mako is the cheapest and the Mori was the most expensive I've seen. I don't really want this to be known as a budget build, I'd rather it be a top-notch killing instrument. What slip-tips have you guys used/prefer/disapprove of??

P.S. Anybody have one for an 8mm shaft for sale?

  • Mori, makes the best sliptip I've put my hands on. If I was looking to buy a knife to save my life, it would be a Randll. If if I was hunting fish of a life time the gear would be fabricated by me or I would buy it from Mori.

  • I've used Riffe's, Aimrite's and Mori's. Riffe's have horrible hydrodynamics, and will veer your shots off significantly. Aimrite's are nice, but they are on the small side. I've landed quite a few nice fish with it though. I've used it on my riffe c3x for some time, and it's good for that size of gun. Mori's are top notch, and he's a great guy to deal with. They are a bit bigger, and therefore heavier, so be sure to have a gun with enough mass to handle the amount of power it will take to propel the shaft at the same speed. I've seen the Plamen Kolev ones, they're pretty cool, but something about the amount of parts within them doesn't sit right to me. A tiny little SS ring holds the line in place, and the screw on tips... that's two too many parts for me. K.I.S.S. right? There's lots of good stuff out there, JBL's warhead tip is a no-frills workhorse. And of course MAKO just came out with one too. Heck, Neptonics has the ultimate sliptip they're offering now.

Damn, I guess it all comes down to what will work for you! Good luck!

  • My last 30 or 40 trigger pulls have been with the Riffe ice pick or a jbl tri cut ice pick rerigged to my specs. All solid, pass through shots, on wsb and yt. None of them took anymore then my shooting line. I own mori KP and alexander tips as well.

  • I have used Riffe, Mori and Wong slip tips. The Riffe was a decent tip but I didn't use it long and sold the gun for other reasons. The Wong slip tips I have had are solid and what I like to call "Almost Mori". They are really similar to the Mori sliptips and they are great hardware. I have had a few crazy shots with my Wong sliptip. I have owned a few Mori tips as well and they are as solid as it gets. They seat flawlessly and feel secure when it is loaded. They go right though fish and have deployed every time for me (when I hit them that is). You can't beat the Mori tips. I think the Wong tips are just about the same price and came with both cable and spectra rigging as I recall.

I just switched from a wong back to a Mori when I took a shot too close to the reef (damn 8 lb. Calico!).

  • Has anybody used to Rob Allen slip tube? Seems very simple ( I think I could make one). Might give it a try and if it doesn't work I'll install a flopper and buy a Mori.

  • Target fish will be mahi, wahoo and other bigger stronger south florida fish (tuna, amberjack, kingfish, etc). I saw the Mori on ebay and its consistent with all the prices I saw on the net (~$95).

The Rob Allen slip tube is the latest one I've seen and is very simple and from what I've read has good reviews. I think I would be very easy to produce one if I pick up one of Dan's shafts and his shaft drilling tool. Then get a piece of stainless tube and some spectra. The only drawbacks I've seen mentioned about it and not even any reports. 1) scales/flesh could get wedged between tube and shaft and not allow deployment (no reported incidents in a quick google search). 2) Due to design shaft has to travel all the way through and slip all the way back out, whereas typical slip tips are just kind of seated on the point (Again no report of this problem just theoretical circumstance) To buy a Rob Allen slip tube shaft setup is $130+shipping. For near that amount I'd rather have the Mori.

If I make a knockoff slip tube and it fails, I can add a flopper and have a second shaft for my BW gun. If it works I've saved my money and I'll be even more ecstatic knowing it's one more homemade piece on my homemade gun.

  • I think a Cali diver named Kyle lost the fish of a lifetime (WSB) on a sliptube but I forgot the full story.
If you do one I would highly polish the shaft tip and I.D. of the tube. I do my fart gun inner barrels with a sized hardwood dowel and Menzerna polishing cream. I just never saw one in the flesh.

  • Plamen tips are good but require maintenance. The bad thing about them, or at least the ones I had in the past was the knot retaining saltwater and corroding the threads which eventually broke because of it.

Mori's are definitely the best. I have tried a few of the competitors and they just don't have have the precision mating that Mori's do; which will cause the shaft to veer off course, or even worse, have the tip fall off the shaft before it hits the fish:rolleyes1: Not kidding.

Mori mates each tip and adapter individually, to ensure proper fit and alignment.

Mike, what length shaft are you looking for? I have a few Mori shafts and 2 slip-tips that I would be willing to part with, as I no longer have any guns that utilize these shafts. They are in "like new" condition.

  • I love mori slip tips. If they are looking a little dull I take them to the polishing wheel and they look brand new.

John if Mike doesn't want them give me a PM. with the size and how much you want.

    Thanks Don

  • Looking for an 8mmx180cm shaft (5/16x71"-72"). Please PM me with what you have and price

  • I have a 9/32 Mori slip tip thats been sitting in a coffee mug on my desk for a few years. Needs spectra and sharpening. I know its to small for Mikes gun but maybe someone else can use it.
