new to freediving

  • I've been "free diving" for about a year now. mostly in the shallows where a 25-30 ft dive was extreme. I went scuba diving this week and figured I would test out the deeper waters. To my surprise, I was consistently hitting 65 ft. I always dive with friends, but most of them are more inexperienced than I. Should I be worried about things like shallow water black out at that depth?

  • Congratz, 65ft is a respectable depth. Be on alert whenever you find yourself engaged in some kind of energy depleting activity on the bottom. It's when you become focused on something other than being aware of your physical condition, that time and oxygen can slip away unnoticed and put you in danger. Other than that I don't think diving to that depth is dangerous on its own.

  • Be careful mixing freediving and scuba. If you're going to do both, freedive first.
