Into Post Southern California

  • Hello Speardivers,

I am brand new to spear diving and brand new to this forum. I am 25 years old and recently moved to LA/ OC last summer 15'.

I am absolutely fascinated with the Spearfishing world and have been doing research on the rules and regulations all morning. (Thought that might be a good place to start) I am planning on looking into purchasing some equipment this weekend so I can get out there and start fishing.

Does anyone have any advice on the route I should take to properly learn how to spearfish, maybe steps to take? I am in no rush, I would like to learn properly as I can see this being an activity for me for years to come.

  • To start with, I don't know how good of a diver you already are, but I'd say start off with digging in on some info on freediving. Learn breathing, do's and don'ts and never push it when alone.

  • Welcome to Speardiver, find some friends who dive or look up one of the Clubs like Fathomiers or Long Beach Neptunes, go slow and safe.

    Cheers, Don

  • Welcome mate. First thing I would do is replace the word "properly" in your OP with "safely". Lots of ways to skin the cat in spearfishing. Labeling something as proper or not proper is the basis for many a winter time discussion on the forums.

    Good luck!
