Thank you for your input :)
I have attached a few pics of my latest project, a little 65 cm gun for murky water hunting.
The barrel dimensions are w: 38mm h: 34mm. The barrel is teak and handle is walnut.
I mounted the handle with a sliding dovetail, so it won't pull out when tracking the gun vertically in the water.
It needs balancing and then 8 layers of hand rubbed tung oil finish.
Based on your input I will try to make a 110 cm gun in basically the same lay-out as this little one.

Hi fellow gun builders and spearos, I need your advice on safe barrel dimensions for my next project.
I have gotten my hands on a 7 mm/140 cm spear and need a gun to go with it.
I want a 2 band gun, 16 or 18 mm bands. I'm building the gun out of teak lams.
I want a slim gun that tracks easily horizontally, so i'm thinking of a Riffe style barrel but more rounded.
I wouldn't want to build a barrel only to find out that it bends under load.
How slim can i go without sacrificing rigidity?

    Please :)

    Pics? :rolleyes1:

Many of you guys are posing in tropical blazing sun... would so much want to try that :)
Well, here is a bit of my Scandinavian reality :D
This is my PR, a sea trout (salmo trutta), that I stunshot one evening in oktober, weighing approx. 17 pounds and measuring 35 inches, and one of the bigger ones caught i Denmark this year.
    Water temp 45 F...

    Thanks for kind words.

Thats true Don, you adviced me last summer on balancing this gun - your advice was spot on :)
My inspiration has come from Riffe and Spearotiki - Riffe for its raw looks/functionality. Spearotiki for beauty and love of wood.
The shaft overhang is about 10 inches which suits me fine for sighting. The cork is set in rubber cement, I believe it is also used for yacht flooring... but you are right Steve, I do not want any hidden pockets of water, I must pay attention to that.
The Riffe mech was what I got my hands on, and it is a sweet trigger compared to the ones I have on my Omers - but it will not be first choice for my next guns... letting the trigger housing in the wood is a bit akward, as the side walls flare out. I would love to try Neptonics, but it is too difficult to get my hands on shafts with square notches. He does not make triggers for euro shafts???
The gun is glued with PU glue, but the handle also has a mechanical lock, some sort of wide sliding dovetail - that way I can not pull the handle "out of the gun" when raising or lowering the gun in the water.

ah... and the PR this gun got me, is a sea trout (salmo trutta) weighing around 17 pounds :))

    Hi all
This post to show my first gun build...
It is a 90 cm euro, made of 4 lams (teak/mahogany/mahogany/teak) and handle made of walnut. It has at tung oil finish that has hardened up nicely to a very tough surface.
With the gun being so slim it was quite nose heavy when i first took it to the water for balancing out. I solved the problem by routing in a piece of cork in the barrel, lining it with black rubber, for looks.
This gun shoots fine and straight and got me a PR this autumn :)

More guns are to come for sure...

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

You are asking about the gun in my avatar...
I built the gun as my first (but certainly not last) - i will post some pics in the gun build string.

Stumbled upon this forum in my never ending search for gun building inspiration.
My home waters are here in Denmark with the odd visit to Norway, and till now has only been shore based.
Have started my climb up the AIDA ladder in search for safer diving and maybe with an eye on off shore diving.

Happy to be let in with you fellow spearos :)
