Went out on my 16ft Boston Whaler today and hit a shipwreck a few miles off Antigua's coast. The wreck is an old steamer from the early 1900's that sits in about 20ft of water on a Plateau with a drop off to 70-80ft.
As soon as we jumped in I knew it was going to be a killer dive, because the wreck was filled with baitfish and snapper scampering in all directions. My only spear on my 120 Rob Allen is bent so I used my 40" Koah Shortie that I rerigged from how John sent it to me. While all the other guys were picking off smaller snappers, I proceeded to the bow of the wreck where I know there is a little ledge that I once saw a 60lb grouper under. As soon as I peeped under the ledge I saw what looked like a 60lb Cubera staring me straight on:eek:. I raised my gun in haste and missed an easy shot from 10ft away :bang:. The snapper bolted to the deep along with all my pride and confidence. I was so flipping upset with myself that I wanted to go home right there and then.
We swam a few yards from the wreck and were shooting some small reef fish when I got this itch to check the wreck again. This time I started at the back of the boat, looking under any ledge that would house a monster. When I came to the center of the wreck and peeped under a ledge, there I came face to face with what looked like the same monster cubera!! This time I lifted my gun with confidence and let my spear fly as he bolted for an exit. My heart dropped to my toes for an instant as my line looked still...until my reel sang like canary in heat:thumps:. It immediately holed up and kicked up a dust storm under another ledge. I screamed to my friend to give me a back up shot and he unicorned that bitch stiff :gun:. It came in a hair under 50lbs.

Yep. I think it is time to go back after that beast that took my fishing line. I saw this one yesterday following me on a shallow dive in some reefs. The one that took my line makes this one look like it's grandchild lol.

congrats! it seems there is quite a honda following where you are

Yeah man! Hondas rule my country with an iron fist lol. I have owned three JDM Type R's.

nice lil fella! show dem barraz the fear of diesel!

lol. I got him in about 10ft of cloudy water at about 9ft away, thus the shot placement so high lol. Luckly I decided to walk with my Buechat Marlin 115 with reel, because that sucker took alot of line on the initial run :@.

There are no restrictions as far as I am aware of. There are very strict rules about shooting on the reefs though, so if they are not in the open we don't shoot them. Undersized or egged lobsters are definitely restricted. Where i am from there are not mainly rules in terms of fish caught during seasons or other limits as I see you guys are laid with overseas. The population of my country is VERY small (less than 180,000) and only a small amount of people spear fish (personal consumption).

Hello all. I have a 19" JBL mini carbine as my back up gun. The only thing is that the gun for how small it is, comes with a huge 8mm shaft with a gigantic threaded tip . I don't know what JBL was thinking but I would like to replace it with a 6mm shaft of the same length, to create some speed and range to this gun. Does anyone know where I can locate such a shaft and who makes them?

Can you post a pic of the crimps you used and where exactly the line broke?

my camera took a crap on my a couple days ago, but the line was pulled through a tightly squeezed crimp. I was wondering if the crimp was too small or what? I was considering using two crimps next time, back to back, after the shaft. What do you think. Here is a link to the crimps I have:

I just tested my new Buechat Pacific reel today and shot a +5' barry which sped off with line in about 8' of water. There were about 8-13 of them in a school averaging 5 feet long. The barry ended up plucking my line loose by the crimp which ties to the shaft. I use 1.7mm crimps with 1.4mm 200ft lb test mono. I ended up loosing my brand new pursuit shaft I just bought and wouldn't like it reoccurred, so could someone relate to me what could have happened why my crimp failed.
