    John,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I read about his drowning. Reels can be dangerous.. you have extra lines, you can have a band tangle with your shooting line when you hit a fish. It's really important to go through the different scenarios in your head before they happen.

-Band tangle. Grab the Reel line from the Reel and head to the surface without the gun letting the line run through your fingers. If you are in Ca. and in the Kelp, think to tye this off to the Kelp and head to the surface.

-Line around the Weights/Belt, Try to get it untangled, Cut it with a Knife, or drop your belt.

-Line around legs, arms. Cut it with a knife.

And always.... remember that That Gun is Replaceable. In a worst case scenario. Let it Go.

The CO2 float is a good idea, but needs to be very accessible and practiced. Belt Reels are also good. Also need to be accessible and practiced.

Also, it's good to mention that some Species are better Reel fish.. Some fish, ie big Jacks, or Dogtooth Tuna, etc. will head for the bottom and try to wrap up on structure. It's not a great match to go for these fish with a Reel unless you are near a big drop off and currents which can help you to get them off the reef and into the open for the fight.
Wahoo, Spanish Mackeral, etc. have a different normal characteristic where they will Speed off in thumb blistoering runs in Mid Water and make big Arcs or Straight Runs using their speed. These make for great Reel fish, even if they are BIG.

Another consideration is the Shark factor. Using a Reel in the blue is going to be a slower process than using a float..

But, at the end of the day with all of the pros and cons, I like using Reels in the Blue because it's more free while you are hunting, and because it's a much more interactive experience once you've hit the fish, from beginning to end, you are attached. You feel those first runs.. You do the work not the buoy or the bungee.

Big fight on Light Tackle.. 5Oyd Reel. Hour long struggle.

I dive Open Water for Wahoo, Spanish Mackeral etc.. when it's not Crazy Dangerous Currents with a Buoy with @75ft of heavy Mono and a Clip at the End. Along that 75ft, I have all sorts of flashers, and Shiny Materials tied on.. I swim next to this with my gun and a Big Reel with 3OOft of line on it.

In Nasty areas, or if I'm diving deep I'll use a standard Buoy system and clip off to my weight belt. I'm still using the Reel. If need be I can easily unclip from a loop on the front of my Weight belt and clip on to my Shooting line. Then if I fire, both the float and the Reel are attached. This gives me another 2OOft of line behind my 1OOft floatline.. so I don't lose my float.... again..........

Remember with reels.. Always carry a knife. Know how to get to it quickly. If your shooting line tangles with your bands when you shoot a big fish, your reel is still valuable. Leave your gun, Grab the Reel line and run it through your fingers on the way to the surface.

Avoid getting Jackwrapped.......... When I shoot a big fish in Open water with a Reel and there's Lots of line around.. I like to grab my gun, put the bands around my shoulder and try to swim in one direction constantly. This spreads out any recaptured line and avoids me becoming entangled in a bird's nest. It's really important to never allow yourself to be entangled in the Reel line when fighting a big fish.

I also don't use a front line guide. These will take some of the Pressure off of your Reel guide, but also this puts your line closer and towards the stickiest things around.. your bands.. better to let the line run straight down to the fish out of the reel.

I like to pack the inside of my reels with Lithium Grease. This makes them Smoooooth and heat resisitant.

Nope Joe, that guy is living in his own world. He's telling everyone that he paid us and that I'm making the whole thing up, etc. etc. One of us must be mistaken.. But, let's keep this about making nice guns and catching nice dinners.

    for example..

The 2Oft swell we had at the beginning of the week finally calmed down and I had promised the guys helping to build our new factory one for the pot this morning. Went out on a long Drift in the Deep looking for speedsters but nothing showed. On the way in I took off one band and swam into this big cave to see if anyone was home..

    Hi Kolt,

They're a close cousin. Silver Throated Jobfish, aka, Crimson Jobfish, Lehi, etc. Normally they are real deepwater fish. We had this week of big upwelling and heaps of krill and it created for some amazing diving with lots of unusual catches. I found a group of these amongst a huge shoal of Kala/Unicornfish and small trevally. They were in about 1OOft of water, but I was able to bring them up a bit with a flasher. Really nice eating. Now my wife is dissapointed when I come hom with anything else..

That gun in the Picture is:
    15Ocm Tip to Butt
    fit for 3 x 16mm Bands
fit for 7.5mm or 8mm Shaft

We make a 16Ocm and a 17Ocm which are both fit for
    4 x 16mm Bands and 8mm Shafts.

The 17Ocm is what I use for Tuna. It's not a 6 band 1Omm Shaft Cannon.. It's not a designated Giant Yellowfin Gun, but it is a Gun which you can use for Wahoo etc. and Tuna..

    Hi Dan,

I always figured a hybrid was just a description. Some will say a Hybrid Speargun is a gun with which combines different materials ie a Wooden Stock and a Pipe Barrel, others will say that Hybrid refers to the shaping, ie a bulky Mass towards the rear of the gun combined with a tapered barrel and muzzle towards the front of the gun. I prefer using the Biological definition..

    "An offspring resulting from Cross-Breeding"

In this case I combined Carbon fiber and teak to add strength and rigidity that allows a very tapered muzzle.. The muzzle on this gun is 3.5cm x 4.5cm at the Band Slot....

That's our new Composite Ulusub Handle. Solid Glass/Nylon.

This gun is a 15Ocm. I've been putting it through the paces testing it rigourously. It's a smooth tracker. Very maneuverable.

    15Ocm Tip to Butt

:laughing3::laughing::toast::toast:....you can bet Mori has better eyes then me.....the parents were right.:@ I'm going blind.

    Cheers, Don

Is there something I don't know here? Is Mori going to be putting eyes on this as well? I've never met the guy, since I live over here on the other side.. but I have seen some of his cratsmanship and that definitely ups the pressure..

I'll put up some pics in a seperate thread as not to De-rail.

This is a thread about Andre Spearguns.

Regarding the Original Posters question. I've probably shot Andre Guns for more years than anyone.. he and I have been friends since I was whittling guns without power tools, and he was still a Teenager whose family owned a woodshop.. Infact I can proudly say that I lost the first Speargun Andre ever made, the first time he tried it.. when I got pitchpoled by a big tube on my Kayak the first and last time he ever came shorediving with me in Uluwatu.. An offering to the queen of the southern seas.

Andre makes good guns. I think I saw a shipment of his new budget guns going out to the USA this morning..

    Added Pressure..

    Don Paul's inspection.........

7am. Finished the balancing and ballasting yesterday. Added the Lead. Used a 72" 9.5mm Shaft blank for the balancing. Now it's dry again. Heating up the Branding iron this morning... then I'll get 3 coats on today and another 3 tomorrow, and this thing is out the door.

    155cm Custom
    5 x 16mm bands
    fit for a Big Shaft..
    Enclosed Teflon Track
    New Ulusub Composite Handle
    75yd Ulusub Reel

If you ever make it up to NYC, check out the Museum of Natural History Paleo Indian and Eskimo Exhibits. They have a great display on Hunting tools, all sorts of slip tips for fish and Seals.

Whoa!!!!!!!! the bar has just been raised. Incredible. Amazing Handle. Beautiul Blends and shaping. Great contrasting oF the diFFerent woods and the carbon. I'm not sure about the Holes. But, this is one oF the best looking wooden guns I've ever seen. Can we see a better shot oF the Muzzle?

Could a Big flasher system perhaps 5O or so squid lures, and a Burley bag bring the Big Eye in? I've caught a 3OOlb Swordfish on stand up tackle on Rod and Reel. I don't think I'd want anything to do with Spearing one. If your lucky it would just sound, but.. I've heard of other stories, of swords being aggressive. Some fish, ie Swords, Mako's seem like they could turn on you when they are fresh.

Great Post. Keep up the Awesome Adventures!

There's a lot of different grades of composites out there. And there's a lot of different grades of metals out there. There are also big load differences in Mech Designs. Sometimes the pressure of the load is not directed at the Sear, rather shifts towards the ceiling of the housing, etc. Many Rail Guns, and even a some well known Wooden Beast guns use Composite mechanisms. This being said, in my opinion the mech is a place to Overbuild. Stainless Steels and Alloys..

    Don,
    You're awesome.
When I said Ramp in this case, I meant for the line coming off the reel in a forward position. Like a Recessed bevel into that Chunk of wood infront of the Reel so the line would have a place to sit.

It might be nice to extend that recess to include the Reel. You could also think about including some kind of "Ramp" into the center of the bevel to allow the Line to peel off unobstructed.

Looks good so far, interested to see what the Muzzle looks like. I still can't figure out what you and Tin Man are talking about, so I'll wait and see.
