Man I wish we could use tickle sticks and nets here in Santa Barbara, California. Wardens will sometimes issue citations if you are in possession of lobster and have a speargun as they believe we are either shooting the lobster or using the shaft as a tickle stick :/ but power to you brattah. You really are the ninja of the net! Keep the videos coming, I can't see anything worth criticizing except maybe to send some of those bugs my way.

Thanks for the speedy answer. And I know what the flat lens does to help the focus but I was wondering if the flat glass lens has any additional benefits over the flat polycarbonate lens.

Hey Dan I was wondering if the glass lens had any additional benefit in filming? Also, if you are shooting your video in 720p with the flat lens, will the edge of the lens show?
    Thanks, Nick

You son of bitch Davis, I envy you so much. I just got back from a charter boat to Santa Cruz and the warmest the water got was 55 degrees and the best viz was 15' in 49-51 degree water. You lucky guy you. I'll talk to Lonnie about your gun build idea today. I'm sure he would love to whip up something like that. I'll post some pics on Facebook of the three guns he just built when they are all finished. :toast:

Hey guys I was wondering what the viz was looking like down south in the Malibu area. I was planning a trip to Leo carillo tomorrow and I wanted to know what it looked like. Thanks

Wow dude great underwater shots! I love cave and rock diving. I find it more interesting than hunting for White Sea Bass. Also, love the head mount, its awesome and I think I might have to look into that.

Today I went out on a friends of mine's boat and we headed out to Santa Cruz at about 6:30 this morning. The ride out was actually pretty rough and at one point, we hit a wave so hard that the window on the pilot house broke off the sliding. The first spot we hit was Chinese Harbor and while we were pulling in, we spotted multiple white sea bass from the surface but the viz was horrible and the water was cold so the sea bass moved out very quick. We dove Chinese Harbor for about an hour and didn't see a single sign of sea bass again. After moving out of there, we headed over to the side of the island and anchored in at about 35-40 feet of water. The visibility was amazing! From the boat I could easily make out the bottom of reef and I could spot small perch cruising around. We spent about 3 hours there and hunted for wsb until the bubble blowers moved in thick and there was no chance of seeing a sea bass anymore. The viz started out at about 60-70' of viz and dwindled to about 40' at the max towards the end of the dive. Santa Cruz was beautiful today and the ride home was great and smooth. Great day on the water. Also, the water at Chinese was about 52-54 degrees and at the side of the island, it was about 59-60.

No my mask doesn't fog, I always scrub the inside lenses religiously when I first buy a mask. Well I usually have an issue equalizing after about 30' and that bugs me. I just got back from a dive at Santa Cruz about thirty minutes ago and I still cannot hear a darn thing. Plus, there was about 60-80 feet of viz in some spots and I couldn't head to bottom because my ears wouldn't equalize. Trust me, the water was absolutely AMAZING. Of all my dives to islands, I have not even dreamed about having a day like today. But thanks for all the advice guys. I will surely use decongestants next time.

I dive alot and unfortunately my mask always seems to not want to seek, no matter how many different masks I use. So I end up leaking water in my mask and in turn, my nose gets all stuffy. Now my question is, can sudafed be taken to relieve my sinus congestion safely while diving or will it be a possible hazard?

Neat way of incorporating the Riffe handle.

Thanks Dan, it was tricky though to figure out a way to get that tiny handle to fit on that gun so we just routed out a half cylinder piece of teak and epoxied it to the rest of body and sunk it in about a half an inch. Those photos are all photos of it without an epoxy coat on it though. The gun shoots great and has very little recoil, the wood just absorbs all the recoil plus it's quiet as a mouse! For all of you guys thinking about doing your first gun build, for your own sanity, do not use the Riffe mid handle kit. It was quite a challenge but it sure was worth it.

Ha sweet bro I'm looking forward to it! Man after our dive on Sunday morning, I just can't look at Santa Barbara the same anymore...:( Oh well I guess I'll just have to make a trip down! And Lonnie wants to come down really bad too. Maybe this weekend, we will see. Keep that stogie for me to bro!

Dang Davis when do I get to come down with you and plug some cave fish. Cortlen can never stop ranting about the trip you took him on and those bay bass you guys caught. Sounds like a magical time and I love the video. How did you mount the camera on your head?

Wow aresodin your fin in your picture looks invisible! Is it one of those OMER Millennium Ice blades?
Anyways, I agree with Dan, unless you build it yourself, it will be hard to get it exactly right. But if you don't mind possible confusion, go ask a cabinet worker to help you. My diving partner, neighbor, and great friend is a general contractor who also owns a cabinet shop and lucky for me, he is an avid diver so me and him sit down every once in a while and crank out a new idea for a gun or what not and tackle it. He build great guns and I'm sure any experienced wood worker could do close to if not exactly what you want.
    Good Luck!

Hi everybody, my name is Nick Hernandez and I currently live and dive in Santa Barbara. I mostly shore dive, as I don't have a boat, but I have friends with boats...even better. I started diving in 2009 with a bamboo homemade polespear and have upgraded and upgraded to making my own guns. I shot my first seabass only 11 months after I started diving and I finally landed my first halibut last week, the little buggers always escape my eyes. I plan on giving detailed dive reports of all my dives and what not. Can't wait to be a part of this forum.
