The Fish Reef Project-This Saturday, 11am - Spearboard Spearfishing Community

This meeting will be a fundraiser and explanation to the production of new reefs along the california coast. Representatives from NOAA, United anglers, riffe, and Possibly other spearfishing companies are suppose to be there as well. This is not the same project as the Ships-to-Reefs project that is putting a ship off Dana Point.

Also, there will be 2 Mori and/or Riffe guns that will be raffled off for $20 a ticket to help raise money for the project.

I disagree... A slip-tip is the way to go... the thin JBL polespear sliptips are dope and penetrate with ease. I don't want to run into a 20lb hali with only a 5 prong!

short report. Surgy, but patches had patches of 20-30ft vis yesterday. Big calicos out... 100s over legal, 2 that were 2-3lbs and 2 that were 4-5lbs, +100 female sheephead, 5 small males, 1 10lber, 1 15lber, all of which I pass on.

Its always hard for me to pull the trigger the first half of the year, maybe its the cold, maybe its the full freezer!:thumbsup2:

I've been buzzed by a few "real" sharks before that I have not seen, but others have. GW at East end Cat, Grey reef at Kaui, mako on a paddy, and bronze whaler at SCI (Which I turned around at the cry of my dad and a 6ft shark was 5 feet from me coming right at me!)

    Post # 3 :D:D :thumbsup2:

Generations after generations of kids and parents could not wait for the Neptune's Dragon Swim. Sadly the City of Long Beach brought a end to it a few years ago. My self and other Neptune's want to bring it back in the future, perhaps without the 10'flame.:@

    Cheers, Don

No... Make it a 20 foot fireball and tow it off of Laguna Beach on 1/1/12!!!:thumbsup2:

ive never dove the avalon or empire reserve, ive only dove the reserve outside of 2 harbors. like i said there arent that many fish, not nearly as many per acre as say, isthmus reef, a few hundred yards away. however the fish in that reserve are big, and bold. great place to take a camera. however i dont need any more places to take a camera, i need places where i can take home dinner. from what i remember about heisler park, it was a similar situation. not that fishy, but a few toads hanging around if you look for them.

very true, but Hiesler MPA is way inside the kelp bed and often has very little current. Bass love current inwhich they feed on bait pushed into the kelp. I think thats why most of the fish are outside the reserve at hiesler.

ive dove the reserves in catalina a few times, its pretty entertaining. not nearly as many fish as you would think, but the size and fearlessness of the fish in the reserves is rediculous. i brushed the lateral line of an 8-10 lb calico once and it tail slapped me, swam 5 feet away and turned on me, doing that famous calico stare. it was so gnarly it was actually intimidating. i think the larger fish push the smaller ones out of the reserves once they set up territories...atleast in the case of calico and sheephead. when i first jumped in i wsa expecting walls of reef fish, but found the opposite, about a dozen 3-6 lb calico looming around, and a handful of decent sized female goats, with one reefmaster, and one calico that looked like a mutant grouper. the lobsters were of average size, there were donkeys in the back of the deeper skinnier caves, but not more than i see in laguna.

    Funny you say this... another observation I have of the smal MPA at Catalina;

Avalon MPAs; the only fish you see are right next to the entrances where people feed the fish and next to the path of the subs... if you dive Casino point to the north the fish are few and far between.

West end Invertabrae sanctuary... SMCA no take of all inverts (lobster, urchin, squid, ect.); For some reason when I dive these areas I see very littlle amount of lobsters and the reefs are barren of abs and bugs compared to other spots like Empire that are heavily hit.:confused1:

Basically as long as you are in a kayak or boat and your catch and gear is not in the water you can be in an MPA/SMCA!!!

So... If you want to fuk with the fish cops or DFG I am in!!!

Some spots that can be considered; Main Beach to anchor your boat at or have fish weighins, and Cresent bay or Tarranea to Launch a kayak and paddle to non MPA/SMCA areas. You in?

Dove Laguna Beach today. Water was a little bit green and 15ft vis. Less fish than over the weekend, but having a gun was all it took to kill a bunch. I found a nice crack about a month ago and it has been producing like crazy! Some of the life in the crack seen today, 10 sheephead, 3 Calicos, 12 lobster, 4 sculpin, 2 cabezon, 3 eels!!!

I took 2 sheephead, 1 sculpin, and a new PB calico at 5.6lbs!

Enjoy this video of hole hunting.
