Glad it wasn't just me thinking it was strange and not typical.
UN-attended loaded speargun dangling off a float line is not common practice, I would hope.
Hopefully this thread might help others think about their hunting tactics and practices. I know we all dread to hear about events that go wrong.
This might be more common than any of us realize was my initial fear.

His buddy was in front of muzzle as well. Pausing at gun when he goes back down, looks like it's cocked and ready to rock.

The early warning system is interesting topic. Real expensive, 10s - 100s of Millions. Since it's gov, cost should be 3-4X more than projected.
They say for this last one, it would give you 10 sec warning. Not much good 10 seconds unless you are in surgery or the such.
If they can get the warning number up to 5 minutes or so , would be pretty useful, you could stop travel on bridges, tunnels.
The Money spent to do this will help them learn more and could lead to other things.
Will be interesting as they lobby for more taxes.
Local chatter, I see folks doing better at strapping shelves and simple prep work. I have gotten sloppy on not keeping up, you can do simple things like having a string in front of a shelf so the contents will not fall out. doesn't take much. If you have some big one, all of that doesn't matter, but prep for the 6.0 type is not too expensive. Good to do in other areas vs just CA.
Post Quake, I went outside and was only one in neighborhood. I went over to Gas meter and saw nothing wrong. I would have turned it off had I seen anything and then headed to other houses if that was an issue. Then walked external house and saw nothing.
Anything crazy happens one needs to shut off Gas and E power.
Only thing I found was some brazing rods that fell on the ground.
Just north of me, is the Geysers, A large Geothermal area where they use steam to create electricity. They have quakes up there every day.
Quakes don't bother me, Tornados and Hurricanes are different animal.

Looks like Tiger Rockfish go all the way down to central California. Never seen one here in Northern CA.
Looking at Cal DFG regulations, looks like I could shoot them.
---------------------------
The tiger rockfish Sebastes nigrocinctus (also tiger seaperch, banded rockfish, and black-banded rockfish) is a fish found in rocky reefs and boulder fields. It is found in the northeast Pacific Ocean off Kodiak Island, and from Prince William Sound, Alaska, south to Point Buchon, central California. This species of fish is territorial,[1] and somewhat aggressive in certain cases. The fish lurks between crevices in rocks, and coral reefs.

Your doing good with videos and angles, I'm sure you will get better.
Not shooting them, I knew you were looking for a big one near by.
When they swim away, typically they will circle and come back and be watching you. Looking to the side helps on getting the bigger one's. Looks like my water but no bulb kelp, surf and you can see. I like hunting those type formations.

Got woke up at 3:20 AM, thought there was a raccoon in ducting I was going to need to shoot it. Then felt the rollers for a bit. Lost power for a few hours. Think noise was a AL ladder outside.
I did get up and walked around in the dark for a bit outside. Silence, No Gas smells. All Good.

I've been working on a flasher prototype for years and testing it all over the blue planet...
This prototype is inspired from a shape used for decades by spearos in the indian ocean and which is usually made there with old x ray photograph covered with tinfoil...Shape is a fish: Eye and lateral line visual recognition are important++ as well as flashing effect in the depth!!
So I've been trying different materials and set up and finally found the right materials
This kind of flasher must be both flexible (not too much) and resist to the break... and make some repetitive tiny noise in the current
the flashing material stuck on the fish surface must resist to salt water.. as well as line connected ...It works 100% in blue water hunting++/ open sea

Manufacturing it in Canada? with specific materials it cost about 60$ each for an under 10 pieces order
I'm wondering who accept to pay 90$ for a flasher??;)Looks nice, you should be able to get manufacturing cost lower. $60 sounds pretty high to me.

Welcome, You must be close to me, I'm in Santa Rosa.
My first Dive on this coast was for Abalone in 1987, first paycheck went for wetsuit, next paycheck went for a speargun. Got to have priorities.
Abalone gathering 2nd, spearing 1st. I probably have some idea that could help you out. Drop me a line and we can chat.

Welcome, do your research as suggested already, and do that 1st.
Then give a Call to your local Game Warden, He can give you tips and location you might not know about.
Be better to already have a good relationship with him when he see you out diving. The Game warden would rather tell you what he likes and doesn't vs after the fact.
You would be surprised how well this works. He might just set you on some areas where he wants fish count reduced, from a game management perspective and holding capacity of an area.
I've had options you would not believe, just need to talk to them and tell them when you are going there.

Welcome, I'm too far north of you. Above the SF Gate.

When I pay my fees for a Fishing license, Abalone and Salmon punch cards, All of the Elk, Deer, Antelope tags and Hunting license. All of the Duck stamps and fees to hunt Wildlife refuges. The money sent to Ducks Unlimited and Rocky Mountain Elk foundation.
Well I like to think the money is used to manage the resources, at least part of it is. We all can do our part, but I have no clue the Gov bodies are doing their job. That leaves the rest of us as individuals to do out part alone or together in a collective. For we can make a difference in our lifetime.
But in the overall scope of the earth and it's history. We are nothing and make no difference at the end. We can just make a small difference in this tiny gap of time so that we can enjoy our environments. We are a parasite on the earth and will be gone at some point and the host will not even know we were there. Lets all be happy together, gather in numbers together ( scuba and freedivers ) to achieve the best results we can. It seems like 2 fleas fighting over a dog at times....
Those in the thread wanting to take out scuba spear-o s , How about talking to them and educating them. Perhaps they might help educate you. Together you are much stronger as ONE than against each other.
Reminds me of the fly fisherman, I was scum and destroying the river for I used a bait-caster. I was just better fisherman and the fly ego was super high. Every single steel head I caught I let go. Never tasted one, I keep the kings that were going to die anyway. Yet I was the Evil killer of the rivers and the fish in the eyes of the fly fisherman. Free divers - fly fisherman... as Said on ESPN "COME on MAN"
In respect to most fly guys, this is not about you. just a small %.
All divers are a pimple on the butt of it all, rather be a full pimple than 1/2 of one.
I'm done, Two videos, One left one right. So i guess it covers all of us.

Take a look at these bulbs. It's actually a small bulb inside the traditional Edison bulb.
The trick to these are a small internal bulbs has a fancy thin film coating on them The film (filter) will only let the visible spectrum of light pass though it. The rest of the light is reflected back at the filament.
All this energy is used to keep the filament hot so less power draw. The other selling feature is the light coming out of it more balance,
e.g. great for make-up stations for the gal. Makes them look better in this light.
And Yep I was involved in making equipment to apply the films to these bulbs. All of it is in Germany now.
Buy the Philips Halogena Energy Saver Household 046677209698 Household
They used to be at Home Depot. but haven't looked lately.

I stand corrected, spearfishing is a sport.

SPORT
noun
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2. a particular form of this, especially in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
4. jest; fun; mirth; pleasantry: What he said in sport was taken seriously.
5. mockery; ridicule; derision: They made sport of him.

I sure do like the open dialog on some of these threads and no one is scared to voice an opinion.
I really like the fact everyone seems to understand the other perspectives given.
The bow hunting chat was pretty good. I heard the same dialog against the hunter with inline muzzle loaders vs traditional types.
Only issue I had with inline shooters is that (some) would over shoot the range of the gun and just wound an animal. with better Technology and scopes , they can lob rounds in with no energy for a proper kill.
That being said they could get on me for using a tradition weapon with poor ballistics. I could be doing the same thing at close range. Heard this chat around the campfire and seemed both hunters were right. The inline shooter if he didn't over shoot his gun, had better platform to talk from.
Anyway the chat and dialog is what I like , educates us all.
As for Sports, ball games, boxing, golf and even racing fall into that group. Don't see ESPN covering hunting and diving activities.

The simple diver (even in numbers) has far less impact than other larger factors.
Those mentioned already.
But free diver or the scuba folks get blamed more.
All of us are small fry. And yes I do understand that us divers can do too much harvesting in one spot and that needs to be managed.
We take pictures of a big fish, post it. Visibility. Even getting in to the water and leaving we are spotted. and lots of us.
Let's take a commercial operation, Are they posting all the fish they get in pictures. I don't see the largest fish caught records in commercial market, Most tons of fish taken in a day. etc.
Let me google "spearefishing" and go image and see who I see.... the freaking divers....
Lets try "fish kills" no divers in there but lots of fish.
Lets try "commercial fishing" no divers there, and sure there are lots of fish.
Take 100 divers , best of the best, in their life time , they couldn't fill even a quarter of one of those boats on a day run.
Just apples and oranges on limiting divers over others. Most of us just shoot what we can eat.
I guess my main point is I get the free diving scuba deal. but together we are just a bug on the windshield of a Mac truck.

I sent this link to one of my Eng buddies. He's all excited to try and build this now.
Anything new gets him exciting. He's the one that build the jet engine in his garage and was in the middle of that titanic Build that I posted a while ago.
Shouldn't have sent him the link looking back at it. He has too many other jobs to do, like getting his Challenger to the car show this weekend.
