Yep, the tagging is a PITA , but they are trying to Stop all the Poaching going on. Like tagging an Elk or Deer.

I know that beach and cleaning station. My Boat is in Whitethorn over the hill. My diver buddy is probably your ISP. 101netlinks sound familiar?

I got another request for designing a Reel mount for a tubular barreled Gun in the 28-31 mm size, with or without a top rail.

Seems like this should be out there, I don't want to re-invent the Wheel on this one.

Maybe what's out there is junk, is my thought.

Got plenty of other wheels to re-invent as it is.

Didn't see one in Free dive store.

What say you gun experts out there...

If you only testing the tips then clamp down the gun a little more than a shaft length from your steel plate and use a long rope around the trigger so you can be at a safe distance when firing.

Your right, Clamp the gun put the rock in front of it so I'm having contact when the shaft is like 6 - 12 inches from Muzzle.

I can get a "Cool Hand Luke" string to do trigger pull . Flying rock or metal fragments is a concern.

I should break out the video camera too.

Here is the gun. Maybe the two rear bands bent the shaft before it left gun. Maybe it bent bouncing off the ground.

It left the gun all crazy like, makes me think something went wrong before it left gun. Gun is old US Diver beater gun called a Sea Hunter.

Maybe you could mount the speartip with a vice or "C" clamp and launch the rocks at it via a pendulum...

That was talked about, I wanted higher contact speed.

I was going to do that to test the 12 gauge bang stick I got, using a 1 gal jug of water. I never did run that test.

I was way back in beginning, plywood barriers, Safety glasses and the such. metal fragments flying was my biggest concern.

The Pole spear worked great, I had control of it's flight, I just had to be closer.... Why I went for beater speargun first.

    That Boy was getting hunted.

On the bright side, I would rather be in that position than a Grizzly Bear checking me out.

You want a good campfire book, buy this one Alaska Bear Tales by Larry Kaniut.

All real stories from research. You can figure out as stories goes if the guy died or not.

Fear of sharks, child's play. getting a bear on you, well not my thing. The guy getting mauled and buried multiple times was my favorite. that guy made it to tell the details of the multiple burials.

Great book for Camping out with the kids.

I see a new book from Larry called More Alaska Bear tales. I'm going to have to buy that one.

Fear of sharks nothing compared to fear of bear eating you alive. I dive in Red triangle btw.

It's a book you will read the same day you get it. I did.

Pocket Flare Gun for use on bear or yourself, probably a good idea I figure. Hand Grenade even better, but game warden probably not like that too much.

The Grenade might have changed the dynamics of the diver in video. Not trying to give bad ideas, just thinking....

A shark dart would have been better. Got one of those bad boys in collection.

    Ok,

I need some help from the experts. I'm a polespear and pneumatic gun guy. I do have my bluewater Koah gun, I've never shot a band gun in the back yard.

Anyway. I got this beater speargun US-Diver I got off of ebay for like $20 . It's like 2 foot long. Anyway it can handle 3 bands.

My goal was to collect some data on a new spear point that can crack rocks. Been doing to much metallurgy reading at night and get too many new ideas...

Back to topic, I got rid of the line, I made a new fitting that fit on the shaft that sits in the muzzle. Made a quick part to hold the tricut point material I want to test.

I started with one band and was like 20 foot back from 2' x 3' 1/8" thick Steel plate. 1st shot dropped into the dirt. Anyway I added second band and got closer. some of the shots the shaft hit the plate sideways.

Shots were all over the place, I got a couple hits, but nothing consistent Like I wanted. I finally went to 3 bands.

The spear shaft was totally bend at the 3rd notch closest to the tip. I'm not sure if it was from the exit from the gun, or the bounce off the ground. My Son said the shaft was crazy looking in flight, meaning it was worse than the other ones.

At this Point I went for Pole spear and piledrived the Steel plate and the tip did really good. Going to shoot some hard rocks later in the week for a better test.

Any thoughts on what I was doing wrong using the speargun. I can't be the 1st to shoot one out of the water. The lack of line and drag must have changed the dynamics of the flight, the bent shaft, not sure.

The gun and shaft and outside in the dirt. I'll retrieve and post pictures if that will help.

It was Kevin from Ocean Rhino. I am still amazed at what a straight shooter he is.
And Linghunt just reminded me of the time he fabricated an oddball adapter for my pole spear, because he saw on a thread that I could not find one in all the internet.

I've not meet or talked to Kevin, Always have heard good things about Ocean Rhino.

I don't remember the adapter, was it one of them 12mm - 1 threads?

I'm still amazed at how many Thread converters "adapters" are requested out there. All the different ones I make, there always seems to be another one. Pretty crazy product to make, but it's a great CNC lathe part.

The 14mm-1 adapter for Rubber Tubes is super popular, I made a big box of them last summer, figured it would last a couple years minimum, now I only got a couple left and distributor in Australia sold out of theirs too.

I will say I had a good experience over there once. I had a question about some guns I was considering and the owner of one of the companies gave me his cell, had me call him, and sat down that afternoon and shared his knowledge with me. As a total newb, I am still dumbfounded when I think back at what an awesome experience it was and how nice it was for him to take that time. He actually even steered me toward the other gun I was considering, not his company's, because he thought it would fit my needs better.
I totally agree it seems like there is a lot of hysteria over there, but I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet.

Give the Speargun Maker's name, give him a little light pimping. :cool2:

He was what I would call a true American. Had a vision, the drive, and the freedom to develop what his passion was for.

And Yes " Hobie DID build those board and that business himself "

    ---------------------------------------

Google "You didn't build that", if you don't get that in context....

    UPDATE:

I've been busier than a one armed paper hanger: Been getting so many custom orders, I struggle on knowing what to make next.

I finally got a meeting with my Physicist Buddy Dave (also my Boss at local company) I went over the concept and what I wanted to do.

Anyhow, Dave had some great ideas on the sensor array, I figured he would want to use thin film filters.... We are running some numbers and should be setting up a proto-types for testing with just scopes and other test equipment soon.

Question: The Salinity factor: Dave didn't know, nor did I , but does anyone know if a spear shaft is faster in Saltwater vs Fresh. If so what about % of salinity. Not looking for technical #, but gut feel out there... Figure to test with fresh then add Salt and compare...

Dave wanted a better Test Tank, you got to have that he said. Hoping to have a nice tank in a nice building now.

Design is getting more complex than I thought it would. We are going to start with a sensor array every 6 inches, and plan for 3 inches if data needs more resolution.

Want to get this done my mid-May. In June, we are going to get slammed with a big job.

    Updates to follow.

Dan, It's just cheap and I really like 1 inch belts. I got a bigger one similar to the one you showed, but I don't use it too much.

The belts are cheaper for 1 inch and you can transverse across the belt for even wear easier.

I got a Kalamazoo but it's over $200 (not in most folks budget), $288 on Amazon, $259 at Enco (Model 1SM) Got a 1/3HP motor and can run it all day. It take 42 inch belts so you can use Zirconium, these last a long time on Stainless, The Aluminum Oxide don't last long.

Problem with Kalamazoo is Work Table is a little wimpy. I tossed mine and make a thick Aluminum one with a cross groove in it.

I got a couple Delrin plate that slides back and forth on Top for belt wear. The Delrin plate can have fixture holes for alignment too (part to part).

Note the side threaded holes where I can add stops and fixtures for like tapering rubber tubing. I know you like the Grinder for that.

    BEFORE PICS:

AFTER PICS: I didn't have any on computer of the Delrin slider plate.

For that price you don't get a stand either, I had to make one.

Very cool. I also think this hand sharpener is a great little rig

It was quick part , I was thinking one side for coarse paper and other for fine. The finger grooves: I was not sure to do it like I did or to rotate 90 degrees. All about how you want to hold it. Thought a cross would be too much.

Maybe if the whole deal was made out of larger stock, might be a little better.

1 inch belt sander at home way to go.

I use my 1" sander and Scotch Brite wheel on grinder the most of all my tools. I also mounted an old DC motor that came off of a exercise machine, Variable speed and not too fast, Got a drill chuck on there where I mount a carbide deburring tool for internal holes.

Here is the Cheap Harbor Freight belt sander only $39, and you can get it for less with 25% coupon deal. You can't use the zirconium belts on it, but not a bad deal for limited use.

    1 in. x 30 in. Belt Sander

Using a bench grinder, you tend to take off too much material and wear your tips out faster.

I forgot to post pictures from before.

The Coast Guard Diver was happy with it. He wanted replaceable end points he could sharpen with a battery powered hand drill on location, where he was stationed.

I also made him a little mandrel to chuck the points on and a sanding block. Not sure if the block was ergonomic or not, seemed to work for me. I just made it out of scrap material kicking around.

He also got a A2 tool steel point, not heard back about rusting, but didn't draw the hardness back to much. It either stays sharp or it shattered on a rock.

When you heat treat A2 you put it in a Sealed Stainless bag and throw a piece of paper in there to get rid of Oxygen. But anyway at 1750 F the Stainless bag is translucent and you can see the orange tip inside. Pretty neat. I'll get a picture next time I make some.

NCUH meet and greet is march 7-9 at Casper cove in ft Bragg. I'm trying to get that weekend off work. Hope to see you there.

Do you work in a machine or dive shop?

I'm not going to make it to Casper. Sounds like fun. I have my own Machine Shop where I make parts for local companies, I back fill schedule with dive gear and hunting products that I design.

I mostly do Engineering Consulting to put beans and rice on the table.
