Here I am with a fish loving family stuck in north Texas where it is difficult, and bloody expensive, to find good ocean seafood and you two (George & Hank) and others are swimming (pun intended) in all that fresh seafood. Seriously - no way you can eat that much - what do you do with my favorite eating fish? : hoo's, snappers and groupers????

I had a sailfish within shooting range. I surfaced from a dive, looked to my left and "holy shit"….I just stared at it. It was pretty big……and beautiful. I didn't really think of shooting it…..but I do remember thinking it would quickly run all the line off my reel if I did. After a few seconds or however long….I looked at it, it slowly turned and swam off. I didn't feel bad at all for not shooting it. I was in awe.
Bingo! Exactly how I felt. Just a beautiful elegant noble fish

I recall a similar discussion last year, perhaps on the California forum (not weird board), on what individual very personal decision if he/she wanted or would spear a billfish. It was interesting and came out approximately 50/50 as I recall.
I also recall a good polite respectful discussion here on why we dive and spearfish. My position on that discussion aligns with my personal decision not to spear a billfish even though I've had two good close opportunities to large Pacific Sailfish in Panama. When they light up it is a real show and I just enjoyed the moment.
As an old spearo - started when I was 10 or 11 and developed good hunting skills and ability to dive and spear at 80-100 feet and was very successful (still am) at hand catching lobsters - but now with only one or two opportunities to dive - I carry a speargun and occasional will spear a medium size fish for food but my p,erasure is watching my son take up the sport. Can't dive worth a shit anymore - chronic congestion and shitty breath hold MIGHT be a factor <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">
But I do not look down on those that hunt and spear billfish - I respect that as long as it isn't just trophy hunting.
Sorry - just an old guy rambling. Hope you get a nice billfish George and keep it up - I truely envy your life style and so called job.
P.S. if you can't find anyone to help you bring your new panga out of Venezuela - that type of trip is right up my alley. I survived a hurricane on a 55 foot sailboat with only 3 crew members (one female) in 1962 - destroyed the boat pretty much but wow- what an adventure :@
-
I have been fortunate enough to catch a few of these beautiful fish, my last one was just last year (all carefully released and never taken out of the water) - and I've seen two while spearfishing. For me, and this is an individual decision, but I have no desire to kill one of these elegant noble fish. :nono:
Great photo by the way - yours?

Hahahahahah Oscar(shaking head) new twin four stroke yamaha engines [emoji4] strait to margarita, then Grenada... easy from there [emoji6]
Two new Yammy 4 strokes ad three days? That's an easy trip not an adventure. My idea of heading east by north east to pick up the Lessor Antilles then island hop north, along the lee side, spearfishing and stopping for beer and food sounds like a lot mre fun - even with two reliable yammies. <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">

George - are we headed north along the ABC islands or going North East to pick up the Lessor Antilles for safety? Don't wear pink in case we need to make landfall. Love a good adventure and this one seems straight forward. How many engines? One - cool, we better pack emergency rations and water - a female crew or two too

They could have done better with pink weight belt and wetsuit.

hahahahahah man you want no part of this trip! a 26ft panga from caracas to Antigua aint a fun trip my brother, buying myself a spearfishing boat to hit the tuna season in summer hard! If it were a civilized sailing boat i would have rolled out the red carpet for you, IN SPITE of you being colour blind and clearly a hazard on a night watch yelling pink for port!! <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">
We can sail out of the north coast of Venezuela, go east until we hit the Lessor Antilles, then follow them north to Antigua. Easy as long as we stay onthe lee side
We can load fresh water and spear fish when we get hungry or stop in the different islands for subsistence beer and massages. <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">Should only take a couple of weeks if engine doesn't quit. <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">

Ok. Let's put this in parts, as Jack the Ripper used to say...
<img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">I'm in Panama City and I have some spearo friends. I get to know more people to have more options and probably will get a panga so I don't have to depend on others schedules.
My friends like this season because the goupers show up. I've seen some impressive pictures. I'll let you know how it goes.I do have a job. A good one fortunately.

Hank: Now I'm a little closer to you brah!
This week has been crazy, but we have almost everything sorted out.
Geogie: Giant tunas are a little far from Panama City. Anyway, of course I'll look into it when I'm more comfortable here. For the time being, I think that I would have to settle with big pargos, groupers and amberjacks. MAYBE I will have the chance to dive in the Atlantic side for Wahoos. My friends have seen (and lost!) a couple.

Where's the boat you'll be picking up? If it is close to La Guaira (North of Caracas coast), I can arrange something for you. I still have friends over there that can take you out.

Oscar: Bull sharks where? Not than I'm scared of them as I lived in Puerto Rico for 7 years and there is very sharky over there, but it is something to be aware of. My friends tell me that they have never seen a shark in the Pacific side. I guess that they are found in the Atlantic?
The dry season on the Pacific side is very good for big Broomtail Groupers and Jewfish. Used to be good for Big Pargos as well as Amberjeck. Really - no sharks? Used to a very rare day indeed if you didn't see a Shark diving the Pacific Side - maybe the long lines killed them all.
Don't overlook the highly prized Corbina/Corvina - you will hear them grunting. A 20-25 poundrr is a great size for them and make the best ceviche.
Who are your spearo buddies in Panama?
Good having a great job. I think you will find Spearfishing in Panama to be varied and exciting. Atlantic offers a very different but fun venue from the Pacific and so close.
I could tell you my secret spot for huge Robalo/Snook but then would have to kill you <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">

Nice fish my friend. I'm gonna miss my wahoos....

Remeber when I told you wahoos liked the red wetsuit?

Pink not red. Matches his Pink belt. Haha
There are Wahoo in Panama

George - I gave Jon's Ulusub Spearguns a lot of consideration then realized I already have spearguns that rarely get wet anymore so no more spearguns for collecting. They sure do look great and obviously get the job done.
Hope you get it tweaked for your type of hunting.

WTF Marco!! You about to lay down the pain on giant tuna and not a word to your spear brothers :nono:
Hell i am going there to pick up a boat in a few months and was going to crash by you and shoot some fish!!
now where will i stay!! <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">Picking up the boat in Venezuela George? Take some rubbers and toilet paper and trade for the boat and use the $$$ you would have used to pay for me to come help you sail it to Antigua - and hang around for boat week. <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">

Nice video - you do get around a lot diving the word. What is your profession that allows you to travel & spearfish around the world? Thanks!

Well, I moved to Panama a week ago. Those weird things were some of the reasons why I left my country...
Anyhow, there's a buch of stuff that you can export to Venezuela, starting from milk, deodorant, shampoo, toilet paper, diapers, napkins, laundry soap, cleaning chlorine and a laaaaaarge list of etceteras.... The problem is to get paid.

You better stay away from Venezuela. As I did.

I was born and raised diving both coasts of Panama. Had NO idea you had left Maduro's chaos. Where in Panama are you? Panama City? Some decent diving in the Perlas Islands. Right now is dry season which means murky cold water but rainy season starts soon and water warms up and gets clearer. Do you have diving contacts yet? Do you have your little RIB? There is ok diving, well been a lot of years, but used to be ok around Taboga and Tabogia. I made all my spending $$$$ growing up spearing fish and catching Lobsters all along the causeway and selling to resturaunts but those days are probably long gone With all the development on the causeway.
Of course the YFT up the coast and decent shore diving along the Atlantic toward San Blas Isands. Lots of diving opportunities on both coasts and very different. I have spear fished and caught lobsters on both coasts on the same day - not many places you can do that.
Hope it works out for you and the family.
Who are you working for or on your own?
Watch out for the Bull Sharks.

If I lived in Cali and needed a Riffe part, would be the PERFECT excuse to go see the Riffes

My thoughts all along. Worth the drive IMHO and would be a fun visit.

Marco - I export, - you imprt and sell and share 75/25. Exporter gets 75% you easy 25%
$755 for a box of condoms? No protection from shortages in Venezuela - CNN.com
We can do toilet paper too

Great story. Hopefully this research will lead to better management of the Blue Fin Tuna allowing an increase in the population which appears to be at a critical stage worldwide. Thanks for sharing Ramon!
