Cheers guys, I love this little reef gun.

I am still undecided Henrik, I like both horizontal and vertical laminates. I am looking forward to finishing the next couple of guns for David, they are similar with different colour combinations. Then I should get around to finishing my gun I started about 6 months ago.:thumbsup2:

    Thanks guys.

I am pleased with the process I use of getting these blanks straight (especially at this length, I measure Euro from back of band slot to back of mech so this is more like a 1.5m) even though it takes 6 weeks. It is just hanging it for 2 weeks at a time and ripping it on my table saw with a 2.4m straight edge.

These guns are very basic, I run a 5mm taper from front to back (which is very hard to see) What I love is the natural beauty (which I have very little to do with:laughing:) and just using them is so nice.

This gun required no led at all. The density of the timbers works perfectly, slightly muzzle heavy and a slow sink with the shaft in, buoyant with the shaft out.:thumbsup2:

I am very happy with the finish of this gun. A 6 week cure / straighten process has paid off with it being very straight. Its not perfect but improving with each project.

I have 3 more guns under way. One will be ready to rig on the weekend and another 2 for my mate David. These ones are looking fantastic, I cannot wait to get some epoxy onto them.

    Nice! Love the contrasting woods.
Have you ever experienced problems with delaminating?
Do you take the properties of the different woods into account when you laminate?

    Cheers Henrik.

I make test blanks before I make a real gun for myself or others. I also have a testing phase for my blanks that include:
    1. Cutting 4mm thick off cuts from the blank and bending them and hitting them to destruction to check the joint bond strength. If it breaks on a glue joint I do not use the blank and it gets recycled.
    2. I also put 2 untreated pieces into a bucket of water and measure shape changes. If one species of timber swells too much or a joint fails, I do not use that blank and it also gets recycled.

I have had to recycle 15 blanks.

I have not had a gun fail yet but it is always possible when you are laminating exotics.

You ask a very good question regarding the selection of timbers and their properties. I true craftsman question!

I look at multiple factors (in no order):
    1. has the timber been used for boat building
    2. what is its durability class for moisture exposure
    3. its density
    4. its nature to remain true to shape
    5. how well does it bond and accept epoxy
    6. tensile properties
    7. stability under stress
    8. sex appeal ;)

Most of my Euro require next to no lead for balancing.

These are no where near the calibre you are producing but they are fun and I am a sucker for exotic timbers.

I made this very basic but functional little Euro for a mate a little while ago, he still has not picked it up.

    Specifications
    Length: 90cm
    Timber: Merbau, Ash and Wenge
    Handle / mech: Beuchat Marlin
    Finish: Epoxy

I have used the Marlin on a number of these Euro builds and I do like them. They are good value for money but I am seeking an alternative if anyone can recommend on i would love to hear about it.

Well done sir!! How can you add mass to a CF gun? Do you have to compromise the Cf or just "bolt it on"? Maybe a heavy ingot under the line anchor?

I will post some pictures when I am done. The procedure will be to replace the existing line anchor with one with a longer base plate. This will allow me to install the appropriate amount of lead in a new pocket concealed by the anchor plate.

I am keen to add a splash of colour to this gun too. Just because........
