    Welcome Rick! I noticed that sling in your avatar. Would you mind starting a new thread posting up some pictures and give a run through of your build? I have never built a sling (or used one), but it is something on my list I've been wanting to do.

    I will add a third to Akira dkt and Don Paul's suggestion of super glue. When I was first told that I couldn't believe it. With all the epoxy and this and that that I had done I was shocked at the suggestion of super glue.

    You went with it. Nice! I got excited once I saw that first picture. It looks great! I'm going to be bossy and demand a shit ton of pictures of this thing when you're done so I have plenty to drool over. It's looking really good.

    Welcome! Like Hank said, traffic is low, but I think that could be credited to the fact that people seem to post real stuff here. The trash talk, sizing each other up, and straight garbage is left for other boards to click up their post count.

    I feel ya. Do consider this, however. While you shape it you are going to start losing that mass. That is obvious, but once you have done that you will be putting weight back on when everything is on the gun, plus you will be adding just straight up weight. I know the fear of, "well I took this much wood off now am I going to have a light gun that has uncontrollable recoil or did I take so much off that it is going to snap under load." When all is said and done and you have added weight you will realize you didn't lose as much mass as you thought and the wood is much stronger than you thought. It's all about the balance and I am sure you will work it out. You have been doing great so far.

    Ok that is a horse of a different color. I don't know why I thought you were going with a smaller shaft and I totally forgot you were doing enclosed. Power that bad boy up! I do think 4 will be enough, but it's good to give yourself the extra room for that 5th if necessary.


    As for the small id. I switch out my bands so often I wouldn't really be able to comment from experience.


    I haven't taken a single picture of this build. I'll get around to it and start up a thread with it.

    Good god! 5x5/8"? What size shaft are you looking to run? Depending on the shaft you would probably be good with 3-4x14mm small id. Otherwise, you may overpower the shaft and lose accuracy and penetration.


    As for the depth, I agree. You could always go deeper. It just looked shallow from the picture, but if it's looking like it will be weak then play it safe and shave off a little at a time as you feel comfortable. I know how you feel on the strength.

    That looks like an angle I took on my first gun. Ended up being too steep. Open that angle up some more. You could even make it a little deeper it looks. Right now it appears the bands may just roll off.

    Sorry if you took what I was saying as calling you a hypocrite. Definitely not my intent. I was merely trying to add that those who "buddy dive" are basically solo diving as you and many other people do with the only difference being someone would be there to collect them if the worst should occur.

    Don't know if hau is still around, but I am curious how the vest saved him. If it is a manual inflate, how was he able to inflate it under water by mouth when he blacked out?


    Hau, if you're out there could you elaborate on this event? Did you just put whatever you had left in your lungs into the float as you were coming to the surface? Did you perhaps do it while not fully aware of what was going on and just woke up with it inflated (if so, nice inherent reactions!).

    Rub indeed. I have never gone on a dive alone, but the majority of the time I'm alone. We keep tabs on each other. When we surface we look around and see if everything looks ok, but what does that really do? If the worst were to happen to my buddy I would be there just in time to drag his body to the boat/shore. So I suppose I am there to make sure his body is returned to his family (don't mean to sound bleak, but if we're being honest here let's put it all on the table). There are times where we are closer and doing one up one down and those are the times we'll push ourselves to our capabilities. With no one right there we play it as safe as one can in this sport.
