I would be curious to hear people's thoughts on this as well.

I have been using lobster heads which fires up the mutton snappers, hogfish and grouper, while not causing too much attention from sharks.

Over in the islands this past weekend: Really wanted to shoot a wahoo, but I do not think they have moved in thick yet...we caught 1 one on rod and reel.

Below was taken in a few hours...most of the credit goes to my man Nik

First video - shooting a hog:

Second video - retrieving the hog and nik with a grouper shot. They ended up in the same connected hole. Note my erratic hand movement - this is not a usual part of my freediving repertoire. We had been diving all day in about 15 feet, we moved out around 3pm and were bouncing around in 50-60 feet for a few hours when all the above fish were caught. Probably 2 dives before this I should have called it a day, I had not eaten and could tell my body was fatigued. I was really close to a samba on this dive, I am glad Nik was there as a precaution.

Third video - Nik man handeling the grouper at of the hole. He had to use his feet as leverage.

Good for you black! I took the intermediate class and found being out on the line for a few hours, for a couple days challenging enough.

I would like to do another line dive with them soon.

I assume with the instructor class you are not trying to do max dives, but have you noticed an increase in your breath hold/comfortability at depth -- it would seem like you are getting a lot of experience.

    Really enjoyed your post.

I use a hawaiin sling as well and I attempted to drill a hole through the shaft so I could attach a piece of mono line that would be attached to a float line. I did not have a drill press, and was not able to drill through the steel shaft with a hand drill. Do you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this? Thanks

What I have noticed during the summer in the bahamas, is that inshore diving...between the outer islands of the abacos and the barrier reef that sorrounds them...is that during an incoming tide the ocean brings cooler water and the fish seem to be more active. I can feel the thermoclines brought in by the ocean water and focus on searching in that area.

Yeah Dan. I deleted my post. In hindsight it did not seem relevant.

I think this is a great idea and would love to see what our members come up with.

I have a GoPro so the camera would not be necessary, and i am not sure i could take the pressure of actually turning in some footage at the end. Hopefully I can contribute something worthwhile to the DVD. I'll be the 7th person.

I plan on being in the abacos, bahamas at least 4 more times before year end.

Thanks Dan - I thought they looked good as well =).

It def. helps with being comfortable when you have clear water and knowledgable support.

Kid Cudi sings it. He is also on the HBO series How to make it in America.

Lunker, that was the first time I was that deep...most of the time we are in 30 feet or less which is all you need to be in for the Bahamas. We get a lot more fish in 30 feet rather than 70.

I always thought I would be able to get down there, but it was nice actually doing it. I still have a long ways to go...

    Hi,

My parents live in stuart and I make it down there frequently...but have not done much spearfishing there. Like you, most of my spearfishing utilizes a hawaiin sling.

    Glad to have you here.

I took the intermediate class with PFI as well back in February. For me it was well worth it because my experience with freediving techniques basically consisted of everything I had read from the internet.

I have used "their" one up one down technique with a friend that also took the course when we are diving in deeper water. It is a comfortable feeling knowing the person you are diving with is on the surface watching and knows what to do if you potentially get in trouble.

Some people knew to do this without the course...I simply never gave it much thought previously, but I was never pushing my self either...

I have always been curious to jump in on schools of yellowfin and blackfins feeding in the bahamas...the silky and other sharks in the schools definitely make me hesitate...but at least I do not have to worry about great whites.

Virgili is a champ for even getting in the water.

My Friend finished his first 2 years of med school down in Grenada. If you have questions about the school, I can put you in touch with him. He started his rotations a couple months ago in NJ.
