I have been wanting to build a hip loading, wooden, bluewater gun for some time now, and today my project begins. My grandpa had a piece of lumber in his workshop for years and couldn't come up with a use for it so now it's mine. He's a long time scuba diver and former dive shop owner at ocean reef, so he appreciates my diving and hunting. The donor piece was in the back of his workshop(he's been turning wood for 25+ years now as a hobby). It's a 2"x11"x78" piece of mahogany(he thinks based on the grain) that was used in the original construction of a building from 1890. He's had it for years now and couldn't come up with a project for it so it's been given to me for my gun build. Tomorrow I'll make a cut to verify it's mahogany and then begin designing/building the blank. I'll try to get some pictures as progress is made

Over the past couple months I've made posts about fish ripping off and asked inquisitively if anybody could come up with an explanation. I use a reel and when I'm hunting the drag is very loose. Yet lately I have had 3+ muttons rip off, never a grouper, and never a small fish. Well it happened again on Wednesday, I shoot a mutton the shaft hits about 1-1 1/2" below the top of the fish maybe 2 inches behind the gills and as I'm surfacing I see him rip off on the bottom. Frustrated and unknowing I reload and continue hunting like it was a freak accident(again) and not something preventable. Later in the day I see a Mac and as I drop I take the shot and he instantly starts to sink and convulse, but as I surface I notice I'm dragging the fish up with me. I check the drag and it's super loose there is no way the reel is bound up and holding this fish. When I surface I notice that the reel line is tangled in the corkscrew swivel. Voila this could be the problem! Sure enough the reel line gets caught in the corkscrew swivel causing a loop around the guide at the end of my gun, when the fish pulls its like the shooting line is tied with a loop knot directly to the muzzle, allowing stronger fish (that don't hole up instantly(or die)) to rip off.

I have rectified that by using a gigantic ball bearing snap swivel I had in my tackle box. I am still worried about it a little but feel better with the snap swivel. I like the convenience of being able to remove the shooting line from the reel line when need be.

I would've enjoyed seeing a pic of all you guys on Mikes boat. Oh well, maybe I'll get a chance to see Mike's boat in person.
Dan you'll get the first phone call next time.
Judah could you pm or text me the name of the place where you got those socks I like them a lot better than my evo's
-
Judah you should've gotten a picture of the pile of pursuit fins in the back of the boat. Thanks again guys for goin out on such short notice. Rolo although it may look like Bimini it wasn't nearly as productive. Still a great day with great friends.

3rd times a charm - whats that quote something like: fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me..... this fish was just DUMB

touch I believe (steven correct me if im wrong) I see them all over, I find they are my number one enemy when bugging, followed by sea urchins and morrays. Luckily they don't like being disturbed and quickly move on when convinced with a tickle stick or spear

Congrats Roberto

Very cool I still want to find one. May I ask how you found it or lured it in?

Sorry for falling behind posting Broward Beach Conditions. I got a new 32yr old skinny, beautiful Russian GF that is keeping me very BUSY :bed:
Maybe I can get a picture posted of her with fish or the triathlon swim or bikini section later
you may beat her in the tri's but it seems shes getting the better of you at home. thanks for the reports, I now work about 5 minutes from the beach so hopefully I can start diving the lighthouse point/deerfield area in the evenings. Hau, if you'd like, I will try to subsidize your thread while you're "busy"

hau brings a rollergun just in case, I don't see a spear hole in that mac which means he caught it with his teeth.... Nice fish. how were conditions?

I would go with wires made for your outboard. That being said, I recommend outboard shop in pompano, they always have what I need for my mariner and are priced right. I needed a switchbox and wires, the mercury switchbox was like $200 and they gave me the wires for free($50-$60 value). They are always that helpful when I'm in there.
With what Don said, I wouldn't bother with the ground removal, but I would keep the keys in my pocket. My dad thought it was funny to shock the shit out of me in the driveway while I was standing in a big puddle of water from cleaning the boat

I'm pretty sure that kayak is now brown inside

sounds like an awesome experience and a very cool vid to boot, I'm sure the wife and kid understood after you showed them what you were doing. I don't think I could have hung around that long, after a couple minutes I think the fun/cute factor would have worn off and replays of shark week would be going through my head. This time a GW flying through the air with me and the seal in its mouth

Me and my boat are in
-
hau I'll cross my fingers they disappear because rumor has it wahoo are everywhere right now and I'm hoping to pull together a last minute trip for sunday if conditions are ok to try to get one.

Dan - glad to see the rib is up and running
Rolo - classic!
Steven - my throat looked similar a couple weeks ago from moon jellies, wondering if these traveled around the world from the radiated waters of japan?
-
ouch! Dan is that your rib?
-
sorry to hear that Dan, sounds like all the more reason to follow Don's model of your five year plan

I hope all is well, please report when you can.
