I am sorry to go off topic, but why are you against drilling to mount to reel?

I would have no issues with drilling a wooden gun, but I dont want to drill a hole on a metal rail gun (Roballen) due to water intrusion, corrosion, and affecting the flotation.

    Luxemburg,

Thanks for posting that. I am going for that "Barracuda Reel" for sure, if for no other reason than that he made it. Did you see the fish that he shot? That guy is the king of freedive spearfishing!

Does anyone know of a reel that will fit on a railgun without drilling the gun? Omer no longer makes the pelagic, and I am not a big fan of JBL reels.

    Thanks,

    Keith

Yes he is. My wife treats him like a baby, I am holding him because he was climbing on the fish, licking them and getting slime all over him. My wife was freaking out because he was getting dirty and smelly.

A couple of them were 23" long. They are spawining here for the next week or so, I regularly get them 8lbs or so this time of year.

Went to the rigs south of Dauphin Island yeaterday, vis was pretty bad due to the recent storms. (5ft) Got these Sheepshead and called it a day. Snapper everywhere, probably lots of other stuff too, hard to tell when you cant see any farther than the tip of your gun.

    Hello,

I have some experience in this area as I have 2 sons that I have taught to spearfish. I started them with the pole spear, but they were both using guns by the time they were 12. My best advice is to get somthing around 48", 2 band that is easy to load. I started them with the same old 48" undersee pipe gun that I used 30 yrs ago. It has a long extension on the butt that allows hip loading. AB Biller makes a stainless pipe gun that is very similar to it, and is in the price range that you are looking for. Both of my boys are older now, and they use chest load rail guns, euro guns, teak guns, and whatever they can talk me into buying for them, or borrow from my collection. You will hear a lot of opinions about what is the best, I have my favorites also. But, I would start out simple and reasonably priced, and go from there as your experience grows. The biggest fish that I ever killed was with a 2 band voit swim master.

    Ben,
Glad to see another freediver in the area. I use both reels and floatlines, but I probably use the floatline more. For me, it is easier to control the fish with the floatline, and I have no hesitaton with letting my gun go. As far as guns, 48" will do most of what you want to do. I have many guns, both wood and metal, but after 25 years, i have become most comfortable with rear handle euro style rail guns such as the Roballen. I mostly use 2 guns, a 100cm Picasso Carbon and a 130cm Roballen. Its all what you lprefer, and the gun that you have will certainly do the job. I killed a lot of fish with a voit swim master when I first started.

I have an 86 CM Omer MB 30 that has killed more fish than a pogey boat and is still working fine. I think that I have had it for around 15 yrs or so. I wish they still made them.

I have seen this many times, and I am impressed each time I view it. I live on the Northern Gulf of Mexico, and began diving on the oil rigs many years ago. Guys speared fish like this back then, but it was while using scuba. I freedive the rigs, and I can tell you that it takes a lot of physical ability and experience to take a large fish from the structure. Entanglement, barnicle encrusted steel, strong currents, and ever changing levels of visibility are only a few of the challenges encountered while diving on a platform. My hats off to anyone that can extract a Jewfish from this environment while freediving. That pelletier is also a cool piece of equipment. I have been thinking about purchasing one of the Maco2 spearguns. Thanks for posting the video.

Finally got to go for red snapper, first time in over a year. Went out to a gas well in 50' of water, it was covered with snapper in the 8 to 15 pound range. Took me about 20 min. to get my limit. The new pneumatic worked great, but it will take some time before I am used to it. It was good to be back in the water, I dont see anything different in my area than before the spill. The water was clear, and lots of fish.

I went again today with my son, I speared 7 mangrove Snapper and he managed to break his Saltwater fly rod on a Jack Crevalle. I cant figure how to attach photos, so I down loaded it to my pictures in the gallery. Its the only picture that I have in there. The visibility was around 20ft. I had a good time, we will be back in the water in October when the snapper sason opens.
