Used the new MACO2 for the first time today. These fish were no test of the power of this gun. The largest fish was one of those Reds, and it may have weighed 15 lbs. I was surprised that the noise was not as loud as a pneumatic gun, and the aiming is no different than a long pneumatic. The 10mm shaft is propelled thru the water very fast, faster than any gun I have previously owned. I cant wait to use it on Cobia or Amberjack. No recoil, and no excessive amount of bubbles. Learned quickly that the loading valve had to be closed completely or you would loose Co2 after the shot was taken. Surprised to find that the gun floats with the spear out. I am very happy with the purchase, I feel that I am diving with a 30 06 rather than a spear gun.

I have been considering the purchase of a Co2 speargun (MACO2) for over a year now, and I ordered one yesterday. Cant wait for it to get here. It is the "Grande" model with a 10mm spear. Anyone have experience with a Co2 or air powered gun? I plan on using air for the propellant, and have ordered an apparatus to fill the smaller gun bottle from a scuba tank. Is there any difference in the performance between air or Co2? The dealer said that the air was less likely to damage the o rings, but did not say anything about overall performance.

    I am with Don.
I keep a 40 aluminum and backpack on my boat for gear recovery. I actually passed out once getting a Red Snapper untangled from an oil platform in 50ft, and the water was warm. It was just that the fish was tangled in a bunch of old fishing line and crap, and I stayed too long cutting it out. My buddy got me out of a permanent bind that day. I have used scuba for difficult retrieval since then.

I have one on order, just like the one in the picture. MACO2 Grande. I am ordering a Merou reel to attach to it, just like the one in the picture. Cant wait, it should solve all the issues I have had loading large spear guns since I injured my shoulder. I am also ordering some spear butt adapters, and I am going to try them on different shafts other than the 10mm that comes with the gun. I am very excited, and I will post pictures of it as soon as it gets here.

Is that the same kind of Barracuda we get here in California?

Why is it that most people bad mouth them? Taste bad? I know that some in other parts of the country and world have some sort of toxin but I don't think the local ones do.

I've seem some big ones at the islands here and missed a shot but never tried them...

The ones around here (Northern most Gulf of Mexico) are the Great Barracuda, the same as in the Caribbean and the Keys. No ciguatera here, at least no verified accounts that I know of. I have been killing and eating them all my adult life. I don't shoot every one that I see, but this one is destined for a fish fry tomorrow. Absolutely nothing wrong with the taste, but one this size will be soaked in icy salt water over night prior to cooking. I mostly grill them, but this one will get cut to small pieces, mixed with French's yellow mustard, rolled in corn meal, and deep fried. My Wife will prepare Black Beans and fried potatoes, and I will over eat again.

Kind of late for me to be up, but my ears are bothering me. Went diving yesterday, the visibility and current were terrible. Wound up using the shortest guns that I had on the boat, an 86 cm Omer MB 30, and a 100cm Sten. Stoned this Cuda from about 3 ft., and got several Sheepshead. Shot a big AJ that made a pretzel out of the Sten shaft and pulled off. Saw 100's of red snapper on every rig that I dove (and the visibility may have been 15ft). Still had a good time, it was good to get out.

Thanks Marco, i chose the Seas Sub Asso because it was the only one i could find in 130cm. i have a sten in 100cm and a cyrano in 850 also. So the sten o ring kit should work for the asso, thats good info.

No problems yet, but I know that eventually somthing will need repair. I guess that you change the oil the same as with the mares, and with the same frequency. I have never repaired my pneumatics myself, but I need to start.

The shark video was great John! me and my Nephew made the mistake of jumping in behind a shrimp boat that had just cleared the deck, (we didnt know, we thought it had been tied up a while) and it looked similar to your video. Did not take us long to get back on the boat. I also went on memorial day, and I got a personal best mangrove. Krista has pictures, i will post them when she sends them to me. Have not been since snapper opened, but I will be on vacation week after next and staying on the island. Maybe we can get togeather sometime that week.

Way to go John! nice ling. I wanted to go out but I spent saturday changing my trailer springs and correcting some wiring issues. Going to try this weekend, have not landed a cobia yet this year.
