The goverment opened the waters south of my home yesterday, I went spearfishing for the first time this year. It was windy frst thing in the morning, so much that my crew decided not to go with me. Determined, I proceeded by myself. Sometime after 1:00 the seas layed down and I proceeded offshore. I was tied off to a rig in 80ft of wate rwith a rod out and was deciding if I should get in by myself. About that time I noticed a boat load of scuba divers headed in my direction with gear on and spearguns in hand. I quickly grabbed my gear and jumped in ahead of them. I speared 3 mangroves and one Cobia over the course of 30 minutes. Sorry for no pictures, I am going again in the morning with my son, possibly we can get some pictures then.

It was good to be back in the water again.

3 years ago, I was diving a rig in about 80ft of water in 30ft vis. I had shot an amberjack and headed to the top with line peeling off of my reel. On the surface I began retreving the fish, and about the time that I got to my shooting line a bull shark came out of the rig and hit the amberjack. He headed back to the bottom with my fish and spear, and I swam to the boat and handed the gun to my oldest son. I got in and began pulling on the line, but it soon went slack. The mono was cut by either a rig leg or the shark. We left and went to another spot. I have dove that spot many times since then, and seen bull sharks on several occasions, but none have tried to take my fish since that incident.

I have the ape arm thing myself, I will have no issues loading it. Don Paul, have you shot large fish with the pneumatic? I have not yet. I have used band guns until last year, I cant load them anymore due to a shoulder injury, and have started using pneumatics because I can load them with my one good "ape arm". I have a 100 cm, havent shot anything over 30lbs with it yet. I want the 130 because that will be as powerful as it gets, and I used to hunt with a 130cm roballen before the injury. Can I expect performance from the 130cm seac sub pneumatic like the 130cm band gun with one 18mm band?

    Thanks, Keith

I am considering the purchase of a 130 CM Pneumatic, Since Mares does not make this length I have chosen the Seac Sub. They have 2 models, the "Asso" and the "Caccia". The main difference that I see between the 2 models is the shaft diameter. I feel that the 8mm Asso would be better in a 130cm. Does anyone with pneumatic experience have a opinion on this? Also, how available are the replacement parts in the USA? will the spear and butt adapter form the sten work in the Asso?

Thanks in advance for your input

I dont have any personal experience, but it reminds me of a pelletier gun from the 60's. Dont confuse this gun with a pneumatic. Its not. It is a Co2 powered gun, and is very powerful. I would like one myself. Look up the video of Mark Antonie Berry spearing with one. that gun will shoot thru anything.

    Hello everyone,

I live on the Northern gulf of Mexico, and my area (Alabama coast) is affected by the BP oil well disaster. I have been on vacation this week, but the waters in my area, both state and federal are closed to fishing. I have spent every day this week on the water, and I have yet to see an oil slick. Some residue in the form of "tar balls" have washed on shore on both Dauphin Island and Gulf shores. I have been diving with the camera, but the speargun is off limits. I see lots of fish both on the rigs and schooling on top, as we have been spared the heavy oil thus far. Lets pray for an end to this situation, hopefully the area will recover and we can be back on the water soon.

If not, I will be looking to some of you guys for info on another place to spearfish.

I love the picture with the eagle ray and tarpon. I like to try different types of fish. Last summer, my youngest son speared a big cownose ray, he had read in the local paper that they were good to eat, and that their numbers had increased to the point that they were eating all of the shellfish. My wife cooked it, The boys ate it, they liked it. I thought that it was a little stringy and tough. Anyway I am glad that they had the experience.

A good friend of mine shot a big carp while bow hunting last season. He was on the edge of a creek looking for wild pig when he saw it swimmig in shallow water. He shot it with a broad head hunting arrow, then jumped in and grabbed it. He cooked it and said that it was ok. When I was a boy, my father and I would catch "Buffalo Carp" in hoop nets while fishing for catfish. We ate them, it was a long time ago but I dont remember it being bad. (but there were a lot of kids in my family and we were hungry)

    OK guys, help me out;

I have 2 Mares pneumatics, one 850 Cyrano and one 100 cm Sten. I am new to Pneumatics, as I stated earlier, I am using them because I can load them with one arm. I want a 130cm for long shots and Mares does not make them any more. I like the Mares it seems to be a quality product. Can anyone suggest a good quality 130cm pneumatic?

    Thanks,
    KC

    Yes,

I own Riffes and many other brands, I can load my sons Riedel, but it is only 4' long. Its the action of pulling the band back that I cant do. My all time favorite gun before the injury was my 130cm old green handle Roballen. It has one 20mm band and I saw spots after I loaded it. My oldest son may use it this year, probably with 2 smaller bands. I am getting familiar with the pneumatics, and my confidence in them is growing. Our forecast is for the oil to hit our area on wednesday. I had planned a week of diving next week, but I will have to wait and see what areas are closed by then.

    Dan,

I have the Cyrano 850 and the Sten 100. Your friend is correct, the sten has more punch due to the
8mm shaft. I am looking for a 130, but that size is not available in either the sten or cyrano (or omer).
The only 130 that I can find is the Seac Sub Asso. I started using pneumatics last year after a shoulder injury. I am not able to load my band guns anymore, and I was looking for the longest pneumatic possible for clear water conditions. I am glad that I found this forum, it is good to speak with other freedivers.

    Thanks,
    KC

Anyone have any info on the"stunner" pneumatic? I am looking for a good 130cm, was thinking about the SEAC SUB ASSO 130 until I saw these. Is the pippin gun made in Europe?

Hello from the Northern Gulf of Mexico,

Although our fishing future is uncertain due to the catastrophe in the Gulf, I am still planning a weeks holiday in June to try for a few snapper. I am a long time freediver, when I started here, no one else in my area was freediving. I had to get gear and info from California and Austrailia. Now there are several freedivers in the area, ans we are looking forward to some diving this summer. I will be diving if I have to tow my boat to the east coast.
