Hahahhahahah when you get skunked a few times or every one of those bastards break your heart you will be happy for the relaxed hunting of old... believe that! But you got to get over that fever first, and the temperature gets high! [emoji1]

    Well George,

Went today and didnt see any Cuda or Amberjack. But, i did see some Sheephead and a Mangrove!

Didnt have any problem shooting them for a family fish fry today. Just got thru eating fried Mangrove with Gouda Cheese Grits.

After all, you cant fry Wahoo.

Not true... I'm slowing down fast, but I'm fighting it. ;)

    Cheers, Don

    Me too Don.

Thats why we drove 8 hours in my jeep, and went 125 miles out in the gulf of mexico for this trip. I got to do all of these things while im still at it.

Oh, and you remember me saying "how can i go back to shooting amberjack and cuda after that trip"

Well, guess what im doing in the morning!

    1 foot seas or less.

The Amberjack and Cuda are in for it

The 3/8 become really useful when shooting tuna, tuna go through a lot of 5/16 shafts [emoji6] . I would not recommend big shafts for wahoo due to the softness of their flesh, you are not worried about penetrative power with wahoo or it making spaghetti of your shaft. BUT in shark infested waters MAYBE something to be said of a large shaft stunning the fish or doing more damage to allow quick recovery.
Experience matters huge in wahoo, having the experience to know where to shoot and when you can horse the ho verses letting it run. You will be a boss next trip, not that you weren't shooting 5!

    Thanks,

Tuna is the next bluewater adventure, but it will be in September.

    can't wait

Did you have a good laugh at the guys with the huge wings on their guns while you swung your koah through the water? I would have had a good laugh...:D

They had 3/8" shafts too. Definitely looked cumbersome, but i will have to admit that Ced landed more fish than me.

That had more to do with his speed in subduing the fish before they were taken by sharks though.

I believe that given the same band thickness, number, and rubber strech distance, the 5/16" shaft has more kinetic energy than the 3/8" due to it traveling faster. Couldnt prove that though without an underwater chronograph.

I love the Koah, thanks for suggesting it. handles good, shoots where you point it. Took little getting used to.
Like the Mori slip tip also. shoots straight, and you cant say that for most slip tips.

What I like is one can see the guys are being selective and not trigger happy on any hoo that swims.
When I have been aboard really fishy trips offshore I tell my guys ''Let your conscience be your guide''....
    and local and state regs.

    Cheers, Don

This place is unusuall even for the Northern Gulf. Heard stories of it for the last 6 years or so, always thought it was bullcrap.

We chartered a guy to take us out there, He and his mate both are accomplished freedive spearfishermen.
This spot is over 100 miles offshore. Just a Change in the bottom structure in an otherwise flat area.

The boat captain said that it is only that way with the wahoo for February and early March. After that, they cant be found there. Very tiny pressure on these fish due to the remote location and short period that they are available. He still said that our trip was better than average. The weather is very unpredictable here in late winter, so most trips are cancelled. We were just lucky.

The Wahoo were there for that weekend, everywhere you looked.
    So were the sharks...

Wait till you start eating fish sticks.;)

    Cheers, Don

    Hahahahaha!:thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

I just left my barber (who is also a commercial fisherman) and he is trading me some freshwater catfish fillets for doing a little electrical troubleshooting at his place.

Between that and a 60+ lb wahoo, the cuda should be safe till at least June

That's amazing! I thought Cedric was another guy, so ignore my message... Jesus the gulf is going insane it seems that everyone had days like yours out there! So stoked for you Keith! Really man you so deserve that BEAST of a ho! You are now spoiled 😆

    I AM spoiled now!

    answer me this;

how in the hell do i go back to Amberjack and Cuda?

That was my first one. Hunting a high spot in the gulf. First time in the blue after all those years of diving. Seen sharks in numbers and size that i had not previously encountered. Hitting a fish was like sounding the dinner bell. I speared 5 and landed one. sharks got the rest I was a tired old man after that.

Ced was faster than me, he boated 3 and 1/4. He is a great diver.

Go get you some Giant stripes...yewwww!!!

Cant wait to let you know how it turns out!

I got my 68" Koah rear handle plus, Mori tip and shaft, float lines, floats, bungees, and flashers.
Been spearfishing for over 30 years, and i am just now going for blue water fish.

Ced says its a lot less difficult than shooting AJ'S in less than 10' vis at 60ft.

Never been in 100ft vis, cant imagine what that will be like.

    Cant wait!

    :shark1:

I've been dry too much this winter......just had to check under me den chair and make sure there was no eaters,:D

    Cheers, Don

We are going next weekend weather permitting to Texas for Wahoo. Lots of big Wahoo, but Lots of sharks.

The water will be a lot clearer, or im not going to get in.

    Keith

Nice shooting. Stone cold on the second one. The vis wasn't THAT terrible once you got under the surface mud though, no?

About 10 ft at the most, after you passed thru the 25 ft layer of 3 ft vis. The stone shot gun was 80cm.

Fleck,,,that vis gives me the creeps in Bull shark land.:@:@
    That's the way to prevail:thumbsup2:

    Cheers, Don

    So, a funny story about that;

Gillo said "i am not getting in that visibility with the Bull Sharks"

Cedric told him that "we never see sharks here!" I looked at him funny because we see them there all the time.
Gillo got in and shot his first fish in the USA, and his first Amberjack.

On the way home, Ced told him that on our last trip to that spot, we lost a jack to a huge Hammerhead, and a Bull shark tried to get Patricks fish. Gillo was glad he got the fish, but said he would have not got in if he kn ew that.
