Will you have internetz in Thailand Hank? I would miss your stories :(

Far better service than I have here in Belize. No worries. I hope I will have stories to share !!.:thumbsup2:

    Seriously, gonna move to Thailand?
You'll miss the fish where you are now. Many places in Thailand are pretty over fished. If there are big pelagics there, I reckon you gotta do some miles but would love to be proved wrong. Pretty much everything I see there is medium sized compared to what I see you guys post here.

That said, I did run run into an Aussie guy in Cyprus who said there were a few places with OK big fish left. But it was a bit hush hush. He was ex-army and had good connections with some Thai army guys who I guess had the lowdown on where this was...

Got a job offer in Phuket so I signed a two year contract. I know an Aussie there who has a charter sailboat business. We met 20 some years ago in the Philippines. Kept up on Facebook and he's really stoked to spearfish. Says he knows some really good areas.
I would guess it's like the Philippines. Generally yes, very overfished, but if you know some locals, you can still find fish.

I never carry fish around. I gut them and go straight to the boat.
I'm heading to Thailand for two years in about....a week or so.

I'm packing and man, with this new job....responsibility, new place.....let see...they have Dogtooth Tuna....so floatline, floater, slip tip....haha.

Looking forward to a new adventure.

Irv, went out yesterday. 6th cut. Found the snappers but they were spooky. After working them....total non aggression....for 3 hours I finally got close enough at about 70 feet for a shot....and missed. haha. But got three ceros. This one fell off the spear when the flopper didn't open. it was laying on the bottom as I was breathing up to go get it. Then, something....and eel?...pulled it into a hole. Then a big shark came and was cruising around on the bottom for half hour. Then as I was going back to the boat, there was the remainder of the cero, laying on the bottom. Panadas....haha

Irv, a member on here, went out with us Sunday. It was rough and wind came from every direction at some point in the day. Found some fish here and there. Then we went to a place that you can only find with a gps. A hole in the bottom. I stayed on the boat with Willy, my 7 year old son and then DuQuesnay says, "cabio") (local word for cobia).
The boys came over and Irv dropped down and nailed this one. 34 lbs gutted and it had a FULL gut.
Irv's a fast learner. He brought us some wild pig he's shot and smoked. Really good. ya man

And don't copy image address and paste from Facebook. They must change the address over time because the picture will disappear here on SW after a while. I lost a bunch of photos on the "Fricken' Jake" thread.

I am fishing it commercially when I can, with the intention of a Suzuki 300 at the end of the tunnel. But until then I have to live with what I have, skint AF [emoji12].

I hear you. I have that single 90 on my boat....again. I'm dreaming of twin 60s instead but my wife might leave me if i do that. :@

Twins are a nice insurance....IF one breaks. But where we dive, the biggest threat is banging into a shallow patch of reef, in which case, both motors will probably at least bend the props and you're still limping home.

But for my 90, I'm going to buy a spare EMM (Electronic Management Module) which is what broke that last time after 5 years. It's about as easy to change out as plugging in your phone to charge. And all these new 4 strokes are computerized. I'll just carry it on the boat in a nice dry box.

Nice fish. So the boat is virgin no more.

Have you thought about repowering her? Those two strokes are notorious gas hogs. And two, that model...man, that motor is as old as you, isn't it?

Well, at least you're in the water. I'm getting chilled in LAX airport on the way to SE Asia. Enjoy badehh....:thumbsup2:

Matt, I use 62 to 63 inch shafts. A bit shorter than 1.7.

It does seem to be a grouper thing. I've shot a lot more snappers than groupers but they hardly bend shafts even though a dog will almost always try to hole up. Of course, any cubera larger than 20 lbs can do some damage too.

All this talk of hardness...and stiffness....I get enough shit about this from my wife...

So which is a better shaft? The first pic is a spring steel, (or so I was told). This shaft has been bent but as you can see, it's straight. Ugly, but straight. You need to oil these or they will corrode a bit.
The other pic is what appears to be stainless steel, the work of a small black grouper bent it way worse. I've already bent it back some. I'm going to remove the flopper and try to continue straightening it....if I get time before I leave for Thailand tomorrow....but I don't think I can get it perfect.
Point is, the ugly shafts cost about $37. The other ones are quite a bit more. $60? But even if they're the same price, the ugly ones are more cost effective because the hunting we do....or at least when I was in my 50s ...shafts get bent. My buddy Doc says, as he does an Arnold type flex pose, "those rock fish (black grouper) can just ...grrrrrr...flex and bend your shaft". So if we can bend them back, it helps. The SS ones....I have more curtain rods made of SS....:D

Interesting. But if an ET slows the shaft, it's because the shaft is whipping and creating more friction? So if you used the same bands and shaft on a non ET gun, the shaft would be whipping too much and losing accuracy?

I think powering any gun up too much loses accuracy if through nothing else, recoil.

But getting back to bent shafts. I've had Black grouper bend 5/16 stainless also. LIke a pretzel. Thus I have many curtain rods made of bent shafts. The shafts aren't just bent, they're twisted a bit too. Really hard to straighten.

E.g. perhaps the Pathos resists bends better than other spears (I have no idea), but one guy whose testing I trust found the Pathos spear to shoot less accurately when powered up than another brand - he speculated/felt/thought that it was because it whipped too easily since it is less stiff.

Wouldn't an enclosed, or semi enclosed track cure that issue?

Call me crazy but is the strongest the best? I've had all types bend, but the stainless are the hardest to straighten back out. The spring steel bend back easier. And Black Grouper will bend any shaft made....at least on this planet. :D
