Hogfish for dummies

  • I wanted to start a private thread as a factual and informative thread about sharing hogfish information.
No BS, no old wives tales, just real and useful information about everything a spearo wanted to know about hogfish and hogfish spearin.
Please add any real or proven or useful or informative hogfish information to help other spearos learn all about hogfish and hogfish spearin.
    Hope this helps

  • One thing i can say about hogfish that to me is a pretty proven rule is that if you follow steady and dont rush them they will turn around to see if your still there and give you a nice broadside shot.

  • sdeisen88--you are correct and this is exactly what this thread is about. Sharing information
Hogfish almost always know you are there. Most of the time they just mistakenly think that if they camo up and don't move we will not see them. Thats why they allow us to get so close I think

  • Hogfish can be as weary or more weary than other fish. It depends on hunting pressure at the location they're in. Big ones can be smart, broadside my butt, they take off making a motoring sound and don't look back. Hogfish can be gray in color, seen it in Cuba, never seen it in Florida. It's been so long that sometimes I wonder if it's a figment of my imagination.

  • i know what your sayin dan but ive been after a few hogs that take off just out of sight maybe 40-50 feet ahead and if they dont manage too hole up they slow down and just steady on their way, still running but a lot slower. and if you manage to get low and behind them they do turn around to look back.

  • I've seen them do all of these moves also
    BIG hogs don't get big by letting spearos get close <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">
Ever seen a hog turn his back to you as you get close?

  • the main hog trick i use is to dive on the reef's edge and then swim out into the sand...I then aspetto in the sand for a while watching the reef...I have found more than a few hogs moving into or off of the reef like this...I often can only spot them like this and have to surface to breathe up and then descend to shoot, but it still helps me find them...

I also check every large fan coral near the edge of the reef.

  • scott and I teamed up on a hog once.
scott was 50yds ahead of me going down along the first reef.
I was going slow an quiet on the surface an not expecting to see much cause scott usually doesn't miss much.
But this time I saw an 18in hog come out from under the ledge real slow. He stopped just outside of the ledge an looked right and left looking for scott. I didn't move a muscle until the hog thought the coast was clear and he began to feed in the sand. That was his final mistake as 60in of spring steel pinned him to the bottom^^

LunkerBuster---thanks for the trick of spotting the hog and then going back up to breath up for the kill dive

they are really the only fish I feel comfortable doing this with because they tend to stay in one area unless chased....
i also find that a lot of hogs will follow me out into the sand when I dive onto the reef and then out... I don't know why, but it happens and helps me get the tastys back home for dinner
