• Hello to all. My name is Ricky age 28 and I'm currently living abroad in Germany, but home in eastern NC. I am a soldier by occupation and a traditional rod and reel fishing fanatic. Three places I love to be are on the mountain carving in powder, on a boat in blue water, or in the woods/field hunting. To be honest I've never been spearfishing, ever. I've only been snorkeling once to this date (and that occured in a freshwater Alpine lake where I imagine if you thought about spearing a trout the Germans would throw you in jail). Nonetheless that first and only dive, if you can call it one, open my eyes to a whole new world! I was hooked instantly even though the water was 17C/64F with no wetsuit whatsoever; I finned until I was on the brink of hypothermia. I have always been fancinated by aquaculture and marine life. I looked up spearfishing on Youtube and thought man that is my next adventure. So I'm not even a beginner yet but I joined the forum to ask experts questions that I have about the sport. I respect what ya'll do, thanks for having me.

  • Welcome Ricky, you've come to the right place. Many of us wished we had a place like this when we started out, so check out the threads and learn from our experienes but also from our mistakes, and also try to get as much time in the water as you can. Spearfishing is very exciting and very rewarding while freediving so we would not have it any other way. You're in for the adventure of your life! and once again.....Welcome.:)

  • Welcome Ricky, Thank you for your service to our country. I began skin diving in a cold Conn. lake with
a broom handle . Carp were the only fish allowed, I put a few in my garden but went back to my fly rod
within a year. I can't believe I did not know how to equalize me ears at 9 years old and endured allot of pain. Divers are so lucky to have a forum like this with a great bunch of guys to learn from.
Enjoy your journey into our underwater world, it is a beautiful place.
    Cheers, Don Paul

  • Howdy friend. glad to have you.

I echo Don's sentiments too, thank you for all your service.

we are always here (me especially, i am seriously on way too much) to help on another out and to learn and share so read up and ask away.

be careful though..you spear your first fish and those rods are going to start collecting a lot of dust :D

    i like to spear fish

  • I can so see that happening, me putting the rods away after my first speared fish.

I still fish with my ten year old boy, but as soon as I'm on a boat I want to be getting wet with my gun in my hand.
    Cheers, Don Paul

  • We pack rods for the people who stay on the boat - all the normal and enlightened people get in the water and spearfish!:D
