    I believe they just use barbless hooks, the action of them yanking them in doesnt give the fish a chance to spit the hook but once in the boat the fisherman lets the line go slack and out comes the hook.

    Dan, it isn't a hook in the normal sense. It is more of an "L" shape with no barbs. I have a few laying around. When I think of it, I will take a pic and post it. It is awesome catching fish on the lift pole. I never did it commercially, but I have been on some stops where the fish were eating the 100 pound test. I used to have a really nice fiberglass liftpole, but it fell off the boat one night. There is another movie called "Tribute to tuna" that shows what the commercial tuna fleet used to be like back in the day. Gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it.
